SAHRR #2 and RSC

While I was sewing up the throw version of my newest pattern, I started sewing the blocks together for my SAHRR #2. This was the one where instead of doing a round each week according to the prompt, I made a block. I ended up with seven blocks, so of course I had to make two more for a 3 x 3 set.

It turned out so well! I’m so happy to get that striped heart that is in the centre out of the orphan block drawer and into such a pleasing quilt.

I’ve always liked a navy and bright green combination so this quilt satisfies that. It has a strips theme since the centre block was made with strips. Every single block has strips in it except for one star that ‘cheated’ and used a striped fabric.

Round 1 - Make a King's Crown block or a block that starts with the first letter of your name: the Evening Star block with strips in the centre, lower left
Round 2 - Incorporate HSTs - upper right, another star
Round 3 - Add stars - upper left
Round 4 -  Add slashed square blocks - top row, centre
Round 5 - Add quarter or half log cabins - middle row right
Round 6 - Add kite blocks - bottom row, centre

I added a huge snowball block on the left in the centre row, in an effort to use up even more blue and green strips, which are my most plentiful. Since I had made three evening star blocks, I made a fourth so one could go in each corner. The one with the plus in the centre is the only block that doesn't incorporate strips, though I did use a striped fabric.

The border is left over from the backing for another quilt. Other than that, the entire quilt was made with scraps and strips! Do I still have tons in these two colours? Oh yes.

This brings my quilt tops waiting to be quilted to three. Hopefully that will be down to zero by the weekend, as I don't like to have tops waiting. Can't say the same about tops in progress though!

The RSC colour this month is red. Wonderful, because I'm working on the Glowing Hearts quilt for my quilt along! Here is this month's block, sewn as a leader/ender while making red heart blocks.
This one uses strips for the HSTs and a crumb block for the red rectangles
Love that I was able to find a red single image fabric to feature in the centre. It's left over from a pillowcase I made for Brady. He's a Leo.

Here are the four blocks for the year in order: pink, blue, yellow and red.

Here is one of the red heart blocks.I'm really really happy with how this version is coming together.

The pattern is on sale until midnight tonight for just $9CA so grab yours before it goes back to the regular price of $12.

Can't wait until I can put the actual quilt instead of the mockup there!

  3. I really like the blue with the bright green. The bright green isn't as overwhelming as yellow would be. And you are getting rid of scraps, or not (ha, ha). Those reds in your hearts are so beautiful. And your RSC blocks are looking wonderful.

  4. Your blue/green combo really calls to me. Surprisingly, though, not one I normally go with. Why? I have no clue! Another colour I get excited over is anything turquoise. Always have, right back to when I was a kid. Your maiden Glowing Patriotic❤️is perfect in every way!! Who else but you would manage to get some Canadian snowflakes in there, along with hints of northern lights (top strip) and then some spring/garden finery at the tip?

  7. I love your SAHRR made from individual blocks, Sandra! The cool blues and greens are such a pretty combination. The red heart for your red and white Glowing Hearts version is just awesome! I'm just getting ready to go work on my hearts this afternoon!

  8. Love your 2nd SAHRR. Love the colours; although, as you know, they aren't my colours. I'm much more a red, pink, purple sort of person. :-) I'm the opposite to you. I hate a top needing assembling but I have a very long queue of quilts needing to be quilted :-(

  9. Love the greens and blues, what a neat idea to do individual blocks for the SAHRR. That red heart is looking real good!

  10. A very fun second SAHRR. It's nice to use up those odds and ends from the scrap drawer, but it does take a lot to make a dent it seems.

  11. What a lot of fun you are having. You know I love your SAHRR and fun to see your RSCC quilt blocks, too. I am behind...the story of my life, but I will catch up. I, too, don't like having tops waiting to be quilted.
