Summer Vibes

First of all, Happy St. George's Day! He is the patron saint of England, the one who, legend has it, slayed the poor dragon. His colour is red. I'm a bit chuffed as my mum would've said, when I realize that the RSC colour of April is red, and I'm making a red and white quilt for my Quilt Along! She read all my blog posts, and I just know this first paragraph would make her grin in English pride.

When I made my second version of Winter Blues I wanted to make it in warm vibrant colours, totally opposite to the cool blues and icy background of the photo shoot. So I give you Summer Vibes which, I think, definitely is the opposite!
It’s actually spring, not summer, here in the northern hemisphere, and our pink magnolia isn’t quite open yet but she is the closest to a full floral background in my yard for today!

A full-on shot in the evening sun. I love the look of it on the beautiful green grass
I quite like the soft subtle two-colour background, and using the light background as the sashing to add to the soft look.

I did one of my favourite quilting motives: fat flowers and loops. There was no waffling this time; I knew exactly which motif to use. This was before squaring and trimming in the early morning sun.

Here’s the back.

I didn’t have quite enough of the Riley Blake orange floral and I only had a few chunks left of the fat quarters used on the front so I found another light orange from Bonnie and Camille and made the bottom section. I like it! The two sides work well together.

The binding is a vintage marble-ish/watercolour-ish fabric from my leftovers stash. I had just enough for three WOF strips and two half width of fabric strips. The border is an Island Batik hearts chop from my ambassador days. This quilt actually used up a fair number of items in my sewing arsenal:
All of a chunk of Nature’s Touch batting
Finished off a small amount left of a variegated Aurifil thread
All of the Riley Blake floral
All of the fat quarters used on the front (there’s a bit of the green left)

This quilt will be listed in my Etsy shop. I think it makes a bright and cheery baby quilt, or a take-to-yoga-class quilt, which is what I've been using Winter Blues for this past month.💙

Quilt Stats:
Size: 40.5" square
Pattern: my own, SandraJaneQuilts, available here
Fabric: stash--light background is Dear Stella; fat quarters bundle from Rose something rosemade. Some were Northcott; border is Island Batik
Batting: Pellon 93% cotton with 7% polypropylene scrim
Backing: Seaside by October Afternoon for Riley Blake (it has ©2012 on the selvage; why does that not seem very long ago yet it's 13 years🤯); scraps from the front and a chunk Miss Kate by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics
Quilted: on Avril, 35 911 stitches
Threads: pieced on my Bernina; quilted with Essential 20867 Cream; Bottom Line in the bobbin

The pattern is available in my Etsy shop SandraJaneQuilts if you would like to make one. It is also this year's Quilt Along quilt. It includes a throw in a completely different layout, which, by the way, is the next quilt I will be loading onto Avril!

  1. Happy St George's Day to you. Unfortunately it is barely acknowledged in England.
At least in Scotland most people now have St Andrew's Day off as a holiday. The quilt is beautiful. The outer border is perfect. I really need to find some background fabric for my ombre version.

  2. Such a pretty finish, Sandra! This quilt is the one that inspired my choices for Glowing Hearts. I wanted something happy and summery - and yours is definitely happy and summery!

  3. Summer Vibes indeed! So fresh and clear coloured, that it shines right out. Great to see your magnolia giving us even more hope and promise that this year's finicky winter spring thing is going to go away. Magnolias are such a favourite for me when they put on their show in full bloom! Nine and a half Glowing ❤️s are now assembled!

  6. Such a cheerful quilt and I really love the quilting. It is wonderful to use up the stash isn't it. Well, use from the stash. It doesn't seem to get used up. I don't know how many quilts that makes from this pattern, but each is so lovely.

  7. I am really ready for those summer vibes, although spring has been pretty darn delightful so far this year. Beautiful finish, and I love noticing all the serendipitous alignments that happen, like RSC being red in April, etc. :)

  8. Your summer version turned out beautifully. You got some nice photos, the sun is so photo friendly this time of year. I'm looking forward to the quilt along. I found a half yard bundle and some left yardage from some previous project to make my version. I'm hoping it works out as well as both of yours did.
