Last Sunday Stash of 2017

It would appear that I've been in a bit of a stash addition binge, since I posted just a week ago about just shy of 6 yards I picked up while in Florida. I am confessing in this post (and in the ensuing one which has to do with the projects the stash additions are intended for) that I did take advantage of some Black Friday sales. Here's my loot, my Merry Christmas to Sandra from moi:
My first stop was one for whom I am an affiliate, Craftsy. I told you that I had this beautiful fat quarter bundle in my cart. Lily and Loom, 'Modern Hand Drawn'. (yep, it's still available, yep it is still at a terrific price and yep, that is an affiliate link that will take you there)  It is absolutely as lovely as shown on their site and prettier than my fluorescent lighting shows. I got a yard of the navy. Yes I have a plan...don't ask me right now; it will come to me, it will. 😬

What a lovely surprise! In with my fabric was the charm pack of Boundless batiks. Contrary to what I usually do, I opened it (I know, shocker) to get a better look at what was inside:
Simply delicious, yes?!
I also visited a favourite online quilt shop of mine, Fat Quarter Shop, no affiliation. May I say they have one of the very best sale sections, and their 24-hour Flash Sale has drawn me in more than a few times...
This is what caught my eye, a Bloomsbury charm pack for $1.49 (you read that right!), the Free Spirit Spectrum Designer Essentials charm pack, for .89c(!!), which I tilted so you can get a glimpse of the beautiful rainbow within (no I didn't open it, left these two all purty, just like to riffle through them), and a new Olfa cutter, snazzy colour, no?

They seemed a little small and forlorn, right, so I checked out their sale section.  Wait, what?

Some Hazel by Allison Harris? for $4.30/yard?!! Be still my beating heart, two pieces I do not own. I seem to have a small collection started thanks to, you guessed it, a sale (are you seeing a theme here) earlier this year at Connecting Threads (affiliate link which will take you to the wee bit of Hazel they have left).

Somehow, I do not know how, but maybe they were near to each other in the sort by price feature, I found these:
'Chalk and Paint' by Sew Caroline
Sandra's head:  What project are these for, Sandra?
Sandra's heart:  I dunno.
Sandra's head:  Why did you buy them?
Sandra's heart:  Because AGF. These colours! These motifs! Mad love for their fabrics.

They may grow up with some bari j I got from Bernie of Needle and Foot to do the Geode quilt by Blossom Heart Quilts. They may not. I will pet and fondle them for now so they know how much they are loved. Have you FELT the hand of Art Gallery Fabrics? I'll never forget my first caress...eyes widened...wow! This is cotton? Yup.

Finally not because of a Black Friday sale, but because I visited a blogger through a linky somewhere, who had the most gorgeous quilt in purples, who lives in Michigan somewhere; clearly I do not recall who she is, I am sorry to say, but you know how the vortex goes... Anyhow, the background of her quilt was this beautiful twinkly stars fabric from Lizzy House. She said she'd got it at Hawthorne Threads, she has no affiliation, nor have I. Well.
Ya, ya, there's the tea mug again, 3 times it's peeked into the photo, frighteningly close to the fabric. Meh, I knew what I was doing, and, like Angela, with her 'piecing potion'--OMG how I love her--haven't had a spill yet. Besides this was just herbal mint tea, so no biggie if it did spill.
Like the blogger where I saw this fabric said, it is difficult to show just how pretty this is. I got 3 yards so I got a slightly better sale price, a nice feature at Hawthorne Threads. What is the piece on top you're wondering?  It's 'Heart Melodies'.

Oh yes, I have a project. But I don't feel quite like talking about it just yet. One day. And... because AGF, right? and also on sale.

I wish all my readers and their families a most joy-filled Christmas, lots of quilty goodness, and special times to make good memories. That's what is the most important in life is memories. I also wish anyone whose heart is aching for whatever reason, a quiet time if that's what you need, a time to reflect perhaps, or special times with good friends or with family, if that helps you heal. Christmas isn't always joyous for everyone. I will leave you with a photo I took a few days ago, wine bottles decoration I painted and stencilled two Christmases ago, as seen on Pinterest. I just heard on CBC radio that pretty much all of Canada is going to have a white Christmas. It really is so pretty and magical. I can almost hear sleigh bells...

Sunday Stash

While I was in Florida last week, I made sure of a couple of things: more than one visit with my second favourite pibble in the world and her human, John,
Reclining on our dogs' mats, doubled up for comfort! You can see the scar on her thigh from where they purposely broke her leg and threw her in as a bait dog to force other dogs to fight. The guy who did this was caught and did time...but not enough. John rescued Brandy, and she now is literally 'the Princess'. Sleeps on a human bed with her human, spends her days going for walks, meeting others, has hopes of catching a squirrel, and evenings snuggles up on the couch to watch TV or snooze.

This little Maltese cross was super-friendly, even stood with her front legs on Brandy's chest to say "Hiya!" Brandy was her usual gentle self.

and a stop in on Wacky Wednesday at my favourite LQS, Alma Sue Quilts. If you are ever in the Sarasota area, be sure to stop in to this wonderful little shop where you can buy fabrics modern and traditional, watch Amish ladies hand quilting around a frame and listen to them speaking their language.

Wacky Wednesday is when Ella puts all her $5/yard sale fabric down to $4/yard. There wasn't much left... But she had put her seasonal fabric (Christmas and Fall) on for $5/yard too. I got a few yards...
Adorable Scotty dogs, Merry Christmas text, and a pretty grey scroll
Such an interesting and happy tree print and a great red
The Scotty dogs weren't in our house more than 24 hours and they'd already been cut and started to be transformed into...
a Christmas pillowcase for Brady!
You can see my older Christmas pillowcase shams on the left, and a new bright 'for sleeping on' pillowcase behind Brady's. I made it two years ago when I had to ensure, "Santa had barfed up Christmas all over my house," words of Dayna, for me being all festive for Brianne and Brady's visit that year. I'm thinking the trees might need to become new shams for our bed, but then they wouldn't quite go with my Buggy Barn Crazy About Hearts and Stars Christmas quilt... maybe a Christmas cushion cover?

Anyhow Brady's pillowcase is all wrapped up and in the parcel to be mailed off tomorrow.
I remembered to sew in my label 😁
Brady loves dogs, pugs especially, so I think he'll be quite tickled with this new pillowcase. The pattern is Roll It Up off All People Quilt.

Linking up with Molli Sparkles... well I was going to but there isn't a new Sunday Stash, nothing since last Sunday. Hope all is well down under with him.

A Little Stash to Share

A couple of posts ago, I told you that I'd been unable to resist joining in with the Geode QAL with Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts. I've loved floral fabrics forever, bought and also made many dresses, skirts for myself and outfits for my daughters with beautiful floral fabrics. When I saw Bernie's post on Instagram of this fat quarter selection of 'Wild Bloom', bari j's latest line, which she is carrying in her Etsy shop, it beckoned me, floated into my subconsciousness, and then bobbed up into my consciousness whispering, 'you need me'. I'd already intended to buy a rainbow stripe from Bernie for one of my three RSC2017 projects.  This is from Andover, 'And Z' by Kim Schaefer. It needed company on the long trek across the country from west to east right? Bernie also sent a fat quarter gift (aww! she's so sweet) of the text fabric which I plan to incorporate in my Splash of Colour QAL.

Round about Wednesday you can watch for my turn on the 'Winter Games' by Amanda Murphy blog hop on Benartex's Sew In Love With Fabric blog. Here are the fabrics I'll be working with:
I love a fresh take on Christmas colours, and there's just something about turquoises and red with some lime that I find myself more and more drawn to. Check back on Wednesday to see what I make! To be honest, at this point in time, I can't wait to see what I make, lol.

A little surprise for me was seeing that Craftsy (affiliate link there and below) is having a decent sale (up to 50% off) this weekend on kits and supplies (maybe I was snoozing and deleted an email from them? Was not aware...) Just letting you know that one of the kits I bought on a previous sale is back on sale again, along with other kits, and all the Dutch Garden line:
It is really beautiful fabric and a very reasonable price. I am glad to see they have added in the 'what you get' description that the 4 2/3 total yardage is comprised of 5 charm packs and 1 yard. I had planned to make a different quilt, and had expected yardage, but now I look again at the stars one, I'm liking it a lot more!
As always I thank you so very much for using my links to click through as I get a commission if you make a purchase. 🙏 I only am an affiliate for products I do buy myself from companies I patronize.

Sunday Stash

Have you seen my brain? Tell it I'd like it back please? ASAP?  As I opened a new post in Blogger, and went to type "Sunday Stash", zap! Into my head went, "Wait a second...it's the end of May, Sunday...I'm supposed to have a Sunday Stretch post for today!"  Erk.  So I will have one tomorrow most likely, or maybe later today, depending on how the quilting goes on the H2H quilt.  For now, let me massage your sense of creativity, inspiration and 'ahh' feeling we get when we pet or ogle fabric.

Well Hello.  This is Studio Stash by Jennifer Sampou, on last weekend at a screaming good price on Craftsy. (affiliate link)  I told you one had jumped into my cart when I was casing the site for deals.
I took it out of its plastic, intending to unwind it and show you all the strips, laid out flat, but I just couldn't do it, knowing I'd never get them to wind back up so pretty.  I love the pinky reds with the pinks and pinky mauves along with the yellows and golds, into orange and neutrals ... going to be a warm quilt I'm feeling.  And yes, there is a plan.  Kind of jelly roll race, but kind of strips, and sprinkle some stars in for good measure.  Can't go wrong with stars.  Ever.

I also snagged this kit, which was a massive disappointment when I opened the box and saw wtf FIVE charm packs??
It said 4 2/3 yards total yardage, so I assumed I would get cut yardage to make the quilt,
Dutch Garden Charm Stars

which I didn't intend to make; I have another idea in mind, but it won't work with all charm packs.  Maybe the word 'Charm' in the title should have been a clue as to the kit contents... So I'm unsure whether I will keep this, make what I have in mind (two ideas now that I've seen the kit) and add yardage from my stash, or send it back.  I do have to say the colours are rich, perfect for the aunt to whom this is going, who loves blue in particular, and blue and yellow together.  The hand of the fabric is also beautiful, so quality is not the issue, clarity of kit contents is.  I actually made a quilt very similar to this for the Henry Glass Fabrics Challenge last June:

And well, you never know, maybe I'll end up making the pattern for the kit after all, as, what I just said: can't go wrong with stars.

I also acquired this stack which I may have showed you in an earlier post when I was in the #30quiltdesignschallenge with Lisa of Sunlight In Winter Quilts.  I designed a couple of quilts using it!
This is Kate Spain's Paradiso, which I found in the sale section of my LQS in Port Charlotte, FL, this past March and snagged a bunch of it, thinking of aforementioned aunt.  When it was just too pink, I went back and got the Moda Grunge in New Delft you see here, but it still felt too pink.  So when I spied the Dutch Garden by Boundless at Craftsy, I knew that would maybe be better, and one of her daughters has assured me it is perfect.  You may recall my despondency at putting a different kit in my cart using this fabric, only to go back the next day to finish the order and check out, and it was sold out.  Lesson learned, don't dilly-dally, fiddle-faddle around, Sandra, make the decision, and make the purchase!  What do I do now with all this gorgeous Paradiso? Oh, I'm sure I can find someone to sew up a quilt for...I've loved this line since I first spied it and got some to make Tish her pillow cover.

Okay, off to quilt away on Avril to finish up H2H quilt #2.  One more recent purchase from my other affiliate online quilt shop, Connecting Threads. They have a '20% off your total purchase' sale on until May 31, so don't dither if you were thinking of getting something.  I snagged this wide back for the back of my aunt's quilt at their last wide back sale, and it will be terrific with the Dutch Garden fabric:

Thank you to those who have made a purchase through my links.  I truly appreciate it.  Please remember to at least purchase through someone's link, doesn't have to be mine, if you'd rather support a different blogger! 😉

Sunday Stretch For Sewists #17 - Dragonfly

Yin Yoga names the poses with a lot of animal and insect names, this one no exception. It is also known as Straddle and as Upavistha Konasana which means wide-leg forward bend.  Begin by sitting on the floor.  This pose can aggravate sciatica, so be sure to elevate your hips by sitting on a folded up quilt or even a cushion. This helps tilt your pelvis forward, so if you have tight hamstrings, you may find raising your hips in this way helps.  Open your legs as far apart as you can, optimally until the point where you feel that tugging sensation we always look for in Yin.  Lean forward, feeling your pelvis lean towards the floor, and letting your back round, if that is okay for your back.
These are Capsules, Letters and Low Volume
Wait a second.... That is not a yoga pose!  Ooh, but it is sure some pretty eye candy, right?!  I was so happy to get my second installment of my Christmas gift from MacGyver, a fat eighth club of Art Gallery Fabrics from Pink Castle Fabrics.  We are supposed to get 20, but I guess because there was only 19, I got extra (like half a yard!) of the one. I'm thinking I may have to order some more of a couple of these, the one floral in the bottom row, third from the left, in particular.

Okay Dragonfly.  You know, just being able to get down and back up off the floor is something.  Do not think, 'forget it, ain't happenin'; take your time and you can do this! I've said it before here and I say it pretty much every class I teach: you will be amazed at how this simple act of getting down onto and back up off of the floor can help increase your mobility.  My friend Pat sent me the July issue of Prevention, with a cute bookmark marking the article she knew I'd be interested in.  You will be hearing more in my Sunday Stretch posts about personal trainer Katy's theories of maximizing movement, one of her main ones being live on the floor.  In other words, get off the chair as often as you can, and onto the floor, put your computer or iPad on a stool and use a nice big pillow to sit on or lean against while you read or work, put your coffee cups in the cupboard above your head so you have to reach up on tiptoes to get one every morning, and so on.

I have a yoga student who is in her late 60s, doing her best to avoid knee surgery, overweight, and who wouldn't come to yoga for several months because of embarrassment at how awkward she may have looked while trying to do this very thing.  I encouraged her not to stay away, telling her Yin is in a low light room, go in the back row, no one cares because our eyes are closed or heads are down the majority of the time.  So she tried again, and now has been coming regularly, and is so amazed and happy at her improvement! We modify stuff where her knees can't handle it, and she is able to go through the class just fine!

This pose will work your hips, low back and those knees.  Before we go any further, I must also interject a quick thank you to Yvonne at Quilting Jet Girl, for doing a feature on my Yoga Poses monthly post on her Tuesday Tips and Tutorials.  Gee whiz! I was tickled that she'd do that. 🙏
If you have low back issues where you should not round, then keep your tummy pulled in to protect your low back and lean from the hips.

What if this pulls too intensely on the backs of your legs (hamstrings) or you have an aching, healing knee? No problem! Use a cushion to support that healing knee:
This will take the pressure right off it!  If this still pulls too intensely, then either engage your quads which will, in turn, lift or engage your kneecaps to protect the joint, or plant your foot soles on the yoga mat.  Yin is quite different than the Yang, active, warm, use-your-muscles style of yoga.  I have a group of marathon runners who come regularly, and several of them do this pose in the following fashion:
Say what? Legs bent up that much? You bet!
Even if you are flexible and not bothered in the hamstrings, you might like to try this.  You will see how it still gets right into the groin and inner thigh area.  Notice I am doing it with my back flat but that is just to show you that you do not have to round.  Perhaps you slowly start to let your legs straighten, either over the 3-5 minutes hold, or over several weeks of doing this pose

Relax!

The key to Yin is to relax your muscles.  We get into the connective tissues, that white stringy stuff, aka gristle, you see in a package of meat.  If you are a meat-eater, it's a pain to cut through, right?  That, my friends, is the connective tissue of the animal, and we have that webbing throughout our entire bodies, into the very cells themselves.  This webbing tightens up with stress, with repetitive stress (think sewing many hours at a time), with aging, with injury, and with surgery.  Scar tissue? That's connective tissues, which are mostly elongated fibres, a few criss-crossing, but in injuries or surgeries, they criss-cross big-time and mass around the injured area, protecting it, immobilizing it.  This is scar tissue.  It's great while we are healing, not so great when it's time to mobilize.  Yin can help to break that down and give you more mobility!

Breathe!

In any style of yoga, the breath is paramount.  So it is with Yin.  Breathe in and out slowly and steadily to a count of maybe 3 or 4, even 6 or 8, as long as it is not forced.  Kino MacGregor, Ashtangi extraordinaire, says something so beautiful at the closing of the Ashtanga Primary Series, on Cody, something to the effect of "Let every inhale carry with it the memory of the exhale, and let every exhale carry with it the memory of the inhale."  So beautiful, and so flowing and so in the moment.

Hold here for 3 minutes.  Use a timer; close your eyes and go within. Notice where you may be holding onto something: is it your shoulders?  your jaw? your tummy?  Let go... feet are floppy...
If you have a yoga block, you may find you can set it on its end and your forehead may come to rest on it, or maybe you rest your forearms on it as I am on the cushion here.  If you don't have a yoga block, use a cushion as I am.  DO NOT PULL.  Relax.  Have patience here; you can hurt yourself seriously if you pull.  Let gravity do the work; your work is to breathe, to relax and to surrender.  Listen to your heart beat.  Listen to your breath.

To come out, rise back up slowly on an inhale, letting your head come up last if it was dangling.  Take in a couple more breaths and then lean back on your hands without moving your legs. Take a couple more breaths.  Fold in your legs, one at a time to a loose cross-legged seat, and arch your back, looking up, for another couple of breaths.  Ahh! Enjoy the release as the blood rushes through the constricted areas.  This works much like massage therapy to remove blockages, release toxins, and give you more space, more ease of movement.  Be sure to have a drink of water once you head back to your sewing machine.

Possibilities

Yoga is for everyone. Truly. All body types, all ages.  It can do amazing things, on a physical level, yes, but on a mental and spiritual level as you quieten your mind and go within.  If your head and/or chest comes to your mat, you may like to turn it to one side (be sure to do both sides), spread your arms apart so your hands come by your feet.  This feels incredibly good in the shoulders.
Remember to take your glasses off...

It took me years to get to this point, and I've put it here to show you there is always somewhere to go, and there is hope for everyone to see change, for the better.  I think I was about 50, maybe a bit more, when I got my chest to the floor.  Although I'd been practising Ashtanga Yoga for years, I thank the long holds of Yin that allowed my connective tissues, the ligaments, tendons, etc., to slowly give, and allow me to do this with no pulling.  Every time I start to think, meh, I'm (choke) getting too old to ever be able to do that, something happens and I see the possibility.  Be open, I guess, and I admit I am not always, to that growth, that change...those possibilities!

Acupressure

Yin combines Chinese theories of acupressure and acupuncture with the East Indian yoga theories.  We tug on areas and therefore stimulate acupressure points.  The Chinese, like the East Indians, treat the body as a whole.  I tell my students to think in this way: every cell has a Liver component (detoxification), or a Urinary Bladder (elimination) component to it.  This helps us Westerners to understand.

With that in mind then, this pose affects the Liver Meridian as it flows up the inner legs and into the groin.  You may feel some frustration or even anger surface while holding this pose; just try to breathe through it, knowing that something is being released.  Issues in our tissues, remember?  It also affects the Urinary Bladder Meridian as it flows down either side of the spine, and down the backs of the legs.  Maybe fears arise...  The Kidney Meridian is affected also along the inner legs and groin, and the Spleen Meridian if you feel tugging on the insides of your knees.  All this means is that you are stimulating these organs and energy highways and quite possibly removing blockages, if there are any, so energy will flow better.  You, in turn, will feel better, by having better energy flow and better range of movement!

Next month we'll take a look at a couple Dragonfly variations you can do that will help release tension in your back, and in your shoulders while still working the legs

Design Challenge News

The third bi-weekly draw for the #30quiltdesignschallenge2017 happened Friday night, (144 designs in the hashtag pool!!) and Abigail at Cut and Alter was the winner! She won a gift certificate to The Red Hen Shop.

I hope you'll take a moment to visit Melody's shop and give her some support. She has some lovely fabrics, at reasonable prices, and has been so very generous in supporting the design challenge.  The final draw is on March 15, a gift certificate for $50!  Here is Abigail's design.  Along with shadow quilts that I've been playing a lot with since Windfall, I love transparency quilts.
Isn't that cool?!

Now.
If you suddenly find yourself dropping the projects, the commitments, ignoring the emails mounting, refusing to cook - 'you're on your own!' words coming out of your mouth to your family, because you just have to make Abigail's design (with credit to her of course, right, and not selling it, right) then you've been hit by a DrEAMi!  February's link-up was yesterday, but it runs through the end of the month, so, until Wednesday morning. 😉  If you already had a DrEAMi! moment or episode, then you can link it up there!

I'm off to sit on a floor and lean forward for a bit here; although I wrote some of this while sitting on the floor, I still spent too much time sitting in a chair writing this post! You can join me if you've been reading blogs for too long!  Don't forget to check out Craftsy (affiliate link) sometime today though: along with another great supplies and kits sale, they also have a ton of free stuff, classes and patterns, yep, free!

Pop Rocks

This is my second project for Angela's RSC 2017 at soscrappy.  It is not yet in the flimsy stage because I am a bit perplexed as to what/how to get it there.
If you just want to see the Sunday Stash, scroll to the bottom ;-)
You may think so...just what is the problem, Sandra?

There are two more rows, a pink one and a brown one.  Again, so?

Well, it currently measures 60X84 with just these seven ROYGBIV rows.  A nice lap size.  If I add the other two rows, it will be 60X108 and that is just a very weird size.  So think on that while I show you the last two month's of blocks that I just finished.

Here is September's row which was reds with a pop of gold.
Remember I inadvertently began playing with moving from light to dark in both the main colour and the 'pop' of colour.  It was really fun and pushed me a bit to find 24 fabrics in my scraps and stash that would work.  Three of the blocks always got two very dark bars, usually in black with the theme colour on it.  This is a great black with red dots batik that I used in Brianne's wedding quilt.

Here is October's yellow with a pop of orange:
Sigh, I knew it was too good to be true to have three photos un-photobombed by Bella!  In her defense, this row is full of kitties!

In case you've forgotten, here is the pink row
and the brown row:
I want them both as part of the front of the quilt!

I thought I'd put the pink at the top, as it would come before red, since you add white to red to get pink.
Then I figured I'd put the brown at the bottom.  I love the teddies fabric, scraps from Dayna's first quilt I made her, the cows, from two runners, one for an aunt, and another for an uncle. There's a rayon challis floral fabric from which I made a skirt centuries ago for myself, and the middle pink 'ring' fabric is from my mum's 70th birthday quilt, another scrap from my niece's housewarming quilt...so you start to see the memories just this one row evokes.

Julie of Pink Doxies suggested (yesterday we met up down here in Florida, what fun!)
Food!! On the left is cake we had at The Bubble Room Restaurant -- MacGyver's hand is there so you get the idea of the MASSIVE piece you get!  On the right is a delicious dish I made this past week, Veggie Lasagna Zucchini Boats.

Okay I'm salivating...where was I? Oh yeah, Julie!  She suggested a rainbow-striped fabric to add to the left and right sides of the quilt so it extends it horizontally.  I like that idea; I had already thought about running the pink row and the brown row down those sides, but because the blocks are not the same size (one is 12" square, the other 8X12") that doesn't work and doesn't look right.

I also thought maybe I'd put the brown row on the back; I usually do interesting quilt backs anyhow.  That would mean the length would only be 96, and if I extended each side with a rainbow-theme fabric by 12" I'd have 84" across.

Your thoughts are most welcome.  One other question, what do you think about alternating the run of each row? i.e. row 1 goes light to dark, but the second row would run dark to light?  I will try that tomorrow morning perhaps in the early morning before the dogs get up!
Backing for RSC2016 project #1, perfect!
This arrived from Fat Quarter Shop, along with two zipper pouches, one free from FQS, the other 22c (yes!) from Moda.  Gardenvale by Jen Kingwell (on sale) is going on the back of my project #1 for RSC, Whirling Stars.  The other two hopped into the order, being Downton Abbey 'Downstairs' fabric, why not, and on sale, yes please!

Speaking of fabric, remember this lovely bundle?
All on sale at Pile o' Fabric.  You see, from top to bottom:
REcollection by Katarina Roccella, Art Gallery Fabrics
the next three are all Avant Garde by Katarina Roccella, Art Gallery Fabrics
Holiday 2015 by Melody Miller for Cotton and Steel (headed for a Christmassy cushion cover methinks)
Desk Job by fierce Mally for Windham Fabrics in blue and lime

Sunday Stash from Sew Me A Song

Foof! I think this is the longest gap in blog posts since I started this blog a little over three years ago.  Life stuff has been happening big time in my corner of Planet Earth.  Interesting times.  All is well, so not to worry.

One thing that happened is that when cleaning out my gmail inbox, I discovered a flagged email from a ways back from Becca at Sew Me a Song congratulating me on winning a prize, a gift certificate for Scraptastic Tuesday.  I could not recall using said gc, so I emailed Becca to ask if she could check her records if I had...apparently I had not.  Yay! So this is what I got!!  And yes, I followed Helen of Midget Gem's "rule to be cool" (my moniker for her fair is fair attitude towards fabric purchasing/winning):  I spent some of my own dollars as well as the gift certificate, as, it would be rude not to, right?!
From left to right, half yard cuts of:
Damask from Tiny Dancers by Melimba for Kokka Fabrics (a fabric company whose fabrics I own none of, and wow, are they ever nice)
Three 1/2 yard cuts from Minimalista for Art Gallery Fabrics:
Prisma in Honeycomb, Flora in both Watermelon and Honeycomb

Here we have three more half yard cuts:
Sausalito Cottage by Holly Holderman and Lakehouse Dry Goods, probably headed into something for Dayna (hmm, don't think I own any of their fabrics either!)
Beaded Stripe from Tiny Dancers by Melimba for Kokka Fabrics
Grey Floral from StudioE

I also picked up two fat quarters.  The pink one is probably going to find its way into my eldest daughter, Brianne's quilt.  Isn't it interesting?  It's one I would never buy otherwise, however, fashion and French?  Fits her like "un beau gant".  It's 80% cotton, 20% linen, "Fashion Show" by Suzuko Koseki for Yuwa of Japan.  Fabric manufacturer #3(!) whose fabric I have not got one piece of.  The turquoise one is one from Stof Fabrics, a Danish company, yet another one I own none of (seems to be a theme here). It has a gorgeous hand.

Becca's prices are very good, and be sure to check out her sale and clearance sections!  She has excellent customer service and wow, does she ship FAST!  I know I plan to increase my selection of Stof, Kokka, and Yuwa fabrics for sure through her.

If you're wondering just what is the quilt these lovelies are posed upon, it is Dayna's grad quilt, Shoot For the Moon.  I think we could take another look at it right?!  I had the pleasure of sleeping under it last night, and man, that wool batting has lovely warmth. I was concerned because I like weight upon me; there was no need to be.

She had some fun with our doggies...
Think she had more fun than they did!

Hard to believe that I took this just yesterday at a darling friend's house.  Over the past few months I have been completely overwhelmed by the kindnesses (many) of my friends.  I am so blessed.
It was 71F/just short of 22C yesterday.  Right now it is 34F/1C, brrrr.  I'm so glad I cut all her blooming roses and made her a bouquet to enjoy for several days.  What a treat to inhale the scent of a fresh rosebud on a bush outside on November 18 in Canada!!

Speaking of true friends, I got together with a whole bunch of Alberta ones this past week, such a treat.  Here is a finished pyramid pouch that my friend Janis made.  You saw it in progress a little while ago.
Isn't it adorable? Her twin granddaughters just love them apparently.  It makes me smile!

Sunday Stretch For Sewists #14 Dragon

When you think of dragons, do you think of the fantasy dragons à la Tolkien with their ancient knowledge and love of treasure, or do you think of Chinese dragons and their cavorting in New Year parades, bedecked in radiant colours?
Today's post is another type of dragon, Yin yoga style.  It might make you feel and see colours in your hip joints, ha, it will definitely heat you up (think dragons' fiery breath), oh yes, and it might even bring up some strong emotions much like both fantasy and Chinese dragons can do.

The above barn quilt is a new one to me. Spotted it along Heritage Road in Essex County where there are several.  Doesn't it look beautiful against the red of the barn and framed by the maple (I think) trees in all their glory?
I zoomed in to see the pattern and beautiful colours of both the block and the trees!  It is a huge block; that's a full-size door beside it!
Now that I've planted a pleasant image or two in your mind, let's take a look at this month's Yin pose.

Dragon Pose

This particular pose can help to relieve sciatica.  It also will help you tremendously in your backbends, as it tugs on the front of the hip joints.  When you think about what a backbend looks like, bring your mind to the hip joints and you will immediately realize the importance of lengthening the ligaments in the front of those joints!  This also is a lovely stretch for the quadriceps, actually for the fascial bag that encases the quadriceps. There are many variations of the dragon pose; I will take you through three.  Hold each one for one minute.

To get into the pose the easiest way is to come to all fours on your mat.  Alternatively, you can step into it from Down Dog.

Step your right foot forward, placing it where you right hand is.  Help it ahead if need be, stacking your joints so that your ankle is under your knee.  Place one hand on either side of that leg, resting on your fingertips.  Slide your left leg back, back, coming to rest on the top of the foot, until you feel a very strong tug through the groins and the front of the left hip.  You might also feel a pretty strong compression in the front of the right hip.
In the beginning, your left leg might be at more of a right angle than shown here; that's okay! When was the last time you attempted doing a kind of partial splits shape like this?!  So go easy.  "You want sensation, but don't make it sensational!" to quote Bernie Clark.  Relax your legs.  Close your eyes.  Breathe slowly and steadily in and out through the nose.

If it is too much to rest on your fingertips for the entire minute, go to fists, or flat hands.  Use blocks under your hands, or books if you struggle to reach the floor.  If you change hand position, note that the quads will kick in to help support you; consciously relax them, so you get deep into the hip joint, into the connective tissue, the ligaments, tendons, not the muscles.

After one minute, come upright with your torso, resting both hands just above your knee.  This is why you want to have a quilt doubled up under your knees as I have, since there is a fair amount of pressure on the left knee here.

Try to sink down into the groins; this is pretty intense as the weight of the torso puts a lot of pressure here.  If you have too much pressure on your left knee even with a quilt there, put a cushion under it.  Gaze at the ground in front of you.  Hold for one minute.

Inhale, and on your exhale bring both hands to your mat inside your right leg.  Lower down onto your forearms, resting on your mat or if that is too low, then on a block or a book

If this is too much in the beginning, then keep both hands inside that right leg, simply bending your arms slightly as you lower your torso a little.  Hold for one minute.  I set my phone timer for 3 minutes and place it where I can easily see it, so I can change every minute through the three variations.

For a wonderful but more advanced variation, twist your torso towards the right leg, looking to the sky.  Place your right hand against the inside of the knee and gently push it away from you, letting your foot come to rest on the side edge.  You can stay here one minute, breathing slowly and steadily in and out through your nose.
When you are done 2 or 3 or all 4 variations, tuck your back toes under, push into your right foot, lifting your hips up and back, straightening the right leg, leaning over it.  This is called half splits.  Take several breaths here, enjoying the warmth/coolness/tingling sensations as the blood rushes back into the compressed areas, removing toxins in much the same way a deep tissue massage does.  Alternatively, push up and back, but step back to a most delicious downward facing dog again.  After several breaths in down dog or half splits, rest back in child's pose before doing the other side.

One last quilt photo for you! Sunday Stash is today, and I finally finally redeemed my winnings from Fluffy Sheep Quilting for Scraptastic Tuesday from several months back.  Cindy was unbelievably kind to let me redeem my certificate after forgetting/remembering/forgetting for such a while.  Helen of Midget Gem Quilts put me on to her Skinny Bolts...so as Helen would say, it would be rude to just buy one, right?  These two pretty lengths arrived this past week:
Woo hoo!

Remember to read my previous post for the Autumn Abundance Blog Hop (that link will take you to Bernie's site where you can get the links to all the posts, giveeways at each one) as I have two giveaway prizes up for grabs.  The draw ends tonight and I will announce the winners tomorrow below this paragraph. Speaking of grabbing, you may want to grab yourself a Craftsy class or two; they are all on for less than $20 this weekend.  Click the button on the sidebar to have a look. :-)

Update Monday morning.  From 160 comments (wow!) Mr. Random Generator picked...

1.  The little button basket:

Kelli at Seriously I Think It Needs Stitches  Isn't that a great blog name? And yep she's a RN.

2. The fabric charms, label and selvages:
Linda!
Both winners have been contacted.  Sadly, for each draw I had to draw twice because of no-reply bloggers.  However, yay, in that there were loads of no-reply bloggers and the majority wrote their email address within their comment. :-)

Thank you again for all the comment love and looks like we may have a QAL in 2017.
