SAHRR Round 6 Letters and Numbers

And just like that, another Stay at Home Round Robin is done. This was my second time participating, and once again, I really enjoyed the work for my math and creative brain, and really enjoyed where the quilt ended up, as much a surprise for me as those watching!

Many thanks to Gail of QuiltingGail for dreaming this up and being the main host.

This final round was dreamed up by Kathleen at KathleenMcMusing. I like that her blog, like my own, references our musings that often enhance or inspire  our quilt designs.☺️ She said to use numbers or letters in whatever way we saw fit in our final round. I chose numbers and did a number of pieces in my final border. I actually took one process photo.

My original thought or plan went awry once again. I wanted to keep a calm final border, perhaps in a dark blue or pink, to frame the quilt. Then I had the idea to extend the 2.5” squares into the four corners, and then extend those from the middle of the sides… And so it evolved. I decided to use some of the ‘fish scales’ fabric to fill in and realized that I was using a number of pieces for this final border.

Because I want this quilt to be gender neutral, I decided to make the top and bottom borders pink, and use some of that reed-like brown and fuchsia fabric, also repeating the 2.5” squares motif.

Problems arose, as they are wont to do, when my fat quarter (actually about 2/3 of it) was not tall enough to make the 12” pieces I needed of the fish scales fabric. Serendipity played a bit of a part again, as I had the pieces of fabric I’d already been using in a pile, and when I ruffled through them I saw the Weeks and Ringle fabric I’d used in the paper-pieced fish and thought it might just work since it worked with the orange fish rectangle from round 5…

Yep, I liked it. I made sure to have the oval motifs horizontal as they are in the fish, and it further emphasizes the fish body shape. Excellent! Here is a look at the previous rounds.

Now to quilt it in time for the final parade. As I am about to publish this, I see the red-winged blackbirds are back. I thought I had heard one yesterday, but now I see as well as hear them conkaREEing in our yard. We are off to Cuba for a week, so I will not be responding to comments but I will read them.

  9. I like your number of pieces and the process that got you there. There is so much movement in this quilt—like the wavering of light through water. I hope you get to see lots of wavering during your trip!

  11. Funny how we have this idea, and then that idea morphs into something else, and something else. I love that! It has been fun to see your quilt grow and, as always, reading your thoughts that go into the making of it. I hope you are enjoying every minute of your vacation!

  12. Brilliant! I love how the centre fish are still the main event, and everything else works up to a great looking frame. The quilt looks like lots of fun, maths and rummaging through your stash!
