Luminous Layers QAL Giant Star Points

This week we are making the giant (gold in the cover quilt) star points. I built this quilt from the outside in when I first designed it, so that is how we will build our quilt along quilts.

This week's step is a snap after last week's rather involved cutting directions. I think what made it 'involved' for me was keeping the colours straight. As mentioned, I labelled my stacks Fabric A dark green, etc. to keep them straight in my mind.

Instructions for the small throw will be first with the large throw following in parentheses.

For the giant star points you will need four 9" (13") background (BG) squares and four 9" (13") Fabric A squares. Draw a diagonal line across the four BG squares. I love my Hera marker for this. You can do two at a time if you press hard.

Pair a BG square (mine is light green) with a Fabric A square (mine is forest green) right sides together. Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line to yield two HSTs (half square triangles). Press the seams of one HST to the BG and the other to Fabric A. This will ensure that the seams nest to give crisp points. Trim the squares to 8.5" (12.5"). Make eight HSTs. See the diagram below for the original quilt which has black background and gold giant star points.

Set aside for now, or, if your design wall is empty, you may want to lay them out as I did with mine.

These eight HSTs go with the 8.5” (12.5”) BG squares and 8.5” (12.5”) Fabric A squares.

More on this in another step but if you’re like me, sometimes you want to see how it’s going to shape up, so play away if you like! My quilt will be 72” so the six square feet of it takes up almost all of my eight square feet of design wall!

Please note that I've extended the linkup deadline for sharing your fabrics, ready to cut, or cut up, until this Saturday, April 27.

Next week we will make the large star points. Told ya it would be a nice relaxing pace!

  1. This looks great. I can't wait to sew mine...might sneak it in before the weekend...amid the unpacking and integrating going on here!

  3. Oh! I should put mine up on the design wall! I always forget the Hera marker tip for HSTs - and why are big HSTs more fun than the small ones? LOL

I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment, as they make my day! I answer every one by personal email. :-) Unless... you are a "no-reply" blogger, which can occur for a few reasons. You can get around that by writing out your email within your comment so that I can answer you.
