Luminous Layers QAL Large Violet Star Points

Hope everyone had a very relaxing sewing start to this year's quilt along. Make eight giant HSTs, put them together with eight background squares and four gold squares and poof! more than half of the quilt is done.

Sweet!

Four people linked up their progress, and I am happy to report that Brady chose #2 in the linkup, and that means Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts wins her choice of one of my patterns. 🥳🎉  I do know there are more than double that out there sewing, or even finished sewing their tops, so can't wait to see them all popping up. Remember you can email me a photo for any of the linkups and I will happily link you up for prizes. No blog or Instagram or social media of any kind is necessary.

This week we are continuing in the 'keep the sewing simple' vein, and making eight more HSTs. This week they are the large ones, which are the hues of violets, from berry to blueberry, in my original quilt.

Unfortunately I will not have my own progress to show you until later this week or next, as I am in Alberta, where I have been for the past two and a half weeks. It was not a planned trip, though I was about to book something for May... Brady has been pretty ill for some time, and things had deteriorated to the point where he had finally been given an appointment (urgent status) with a paediatric gut brain specialist (I wholly believe in the gut and heart brains of our bodies). No, the team he has does not go by that nomenclature, but that's how I like to think of them. Incredible caring humans are they. So I wanted to be here to give support and it was definitely the call to make. Hopped on a one-way and have spent the majority of the first two weeks at the hospital where Brady has undergone so. many. tests... It has been determined that he has Crohn's disease. At least we finally have a diagnosis; earlier this year he had been diagnosed with pancreatitis, incredible pain, which we have learned was caused by his Crohn's. So he has been suffering, and it has been awful to witness, and awful to feel so helpless for both him and for Brianne. However, we have a plan, he has stellar care at a stellar hospital, the Stollery Children's Hospital at the U of A, and for the past several days since being discharged, has been heading in a good direction. He has gained back a little weight (he was at a dangerous low), has no pain, and does have an appetite.

Lunch in our favourite bistro, Jef’s

So let's sew up those berry HSTs.

Here is the original quilt for reference. Note that you get a colouring page in the pattern, and a coloured quilt diagram to follow. With the free QAL, you will follow the original quilt photo.

Note once again that the small throw directions or measurements are first followed by the large throw in parentheses.

1. Draw a diagonal line across four 9" (13") Fabric B (green) second background squares. Pair a 9" (13") Fabric B square with a 9" (13") Fabric C (violet) square right sides together. Sew 1/4" on either side of the drawn line. Cut apart on the drawn line to yield two Fabric B/C (green/violet) HSTs. Press seams open or to one side. Trim to 8.5" (12.5"). Set aside for now.

If you laid out the gold and BG squares and HSTs from last week, you may want to now add the green/violet HSTs, with the four 8.5" (12.5") green squares. All that is left to make now are the medium stars and the small stars. These are the more involved, but still pretty basic, steps to go!

Happy sewing everyone, and once again, I thank you for quilting along with me. Each time I sit down to write a post, I like thinking of where this design is: the quilt already made in Scotland, the one being made in New Zealand, the ones already made in three different states (Illinois, Minnesota and West Virginia), and those being made in other states and provinces (and countries I think)!
Update:
I got my large star points all sewn up and set in place on the design wall.

  1. Sandra, I'm so sorry to hear what Brady (and your family) have been going through, and so glad you can be there for him and Brianne. Sounds like they are on a path of figuring things out and helping him to heal. Take care of them and yourself - we're all out here sending you love and support. ❤️

  8. So glad you are there with them. My HSTs need trimming up then I will do some more assembly! I am enjoying the pace as I haven't had much time to sew. I may zip ahead at some point!

  9. Oh Sandra, I'm so sorry to hear about Brady being so ill. BUT, I am glad you finally got a diagnosis and can get him some help in feeling better. It took three years of Madelyn suffering with swollen, painful joints and finally got to the right physician and got a Dx of CRMO. Unfortunately, no cure and she takes Enbril injections weekly for the pain and swelling, but it is helping. Prayers for you and your family. I'm glad you were able to be there for them. I'm sorry I haven't been able to join in your sew along but life is a little crazy right now! I enjoy seeing what others have done though, and I did let my readers know about it and have the link in my side bar! Have a great week.
