The post that explains my 94Quilt project is here. Since July 1 I've been making a flying geese block a day as I read one of the 94 Calls to Action, its accompanying explanations and progress report, and links that go with each one.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is the main website with a wealth of information.
To finish out the Education section...
11. Provide adequate funding to end the backlog of First Nations students seeking post-secondary education.
In progress. Project proposed. This baffles and upsets me. In 2018 the funding approved was actually less than in the previous two years. Make the money available. Now. Full stop. I do like that it's specific as to the amount which goes to First Nations, or Métis Nation, or Inuit.
In progress. Some projects are completed.
I have to add a note that the burgundy here is a bit darker than in real life, and that it is a Benartex Fossil Fern from a way back. Doesn't it look amazing with the modern Moda Grunge? I made a second heart here to signal the end of another section.

Language and Culture
13. Acknowledge that Aboriginal rights include Aboriginal language rights.
Complete.
14. Enact an Aboriginal languages act.
There are five recommendations beneath this Call. In short, Aboriginal languages "are a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture", preserving languages is part of the Treaties, and the government must provide funding, and that this needs to be managed by Aboriginal people.
In progress. In June 2019, Parliament passed the Indigenous Languages Act.
15. Appoint an Aboriginal languages commissioner
Complete. In June 2021, Ronald E. Ignace was appointed as the first Commissioner of Indigenous Languages.
I need to start sewing these together into groups of four. I've been extremely busy this past two weeks with the Make Modern deadline, Cheryl's new book quilt, and a quilt for Sarah's Christmas in July hop (I post tomorrow!). So the next installment of blocks here I should be able to show how the quilt is shaping up.Sites/articles of interest
Indigenous businesses at risk - interesting in view of the Education section I just finished.
A very good podcast available on CBC Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts, is Telling Our Twisted Histories. Each week the host, Kanieht:io, takes one word, and with interviews and stories from First Nations, Métis and Inuit, she teaches us, and, decolonizes our minds. The segments are short, which I like, around 20 minutes each.
Love seeing these and learning from the calls to action is so enlightening. It will be good when they are all enacted and when people can stop thinking that their lives are more important or valuable than anothers.
