SAHRR Prompt 2 Make it a Double

Happy Full Snow Moon and first of February. When I first read Kathleen's prompt on Tuesday for this week, 'Make it a double,' I immediately thought of a double-double. Like 'Make it a double,' it's referring to a drink, though non-alcoholic. A doubles-double is Canadian speak for a Tim Horton's coffee with two cream and two sugar. 🫶
So we were to incorporate the idea of double, or two, in or round this week. I let that thought simmer while I spent the bulk of the time since working on my upcoming pattern in Make Modern. I took a break from the computer on Saturday to work on my SAHHR, since the PQ 17.3 challenge is released on Sunday. Here is where my SAHRR sits at present after this week's prompt.
Yay for some beautiful blues skies and sunshine for an outside pic

I like to incorporate elements from the centre or previous rounds to give a sense of cohesion to the quilt. I'd first thought of doing perhaps a double rail fence, picking up on that block. I did know I wanted this round to be quieter since Round 1 is quite dramatic. It was on Friday that I realized that one of the patches in the opposing block to the rail fence is a sort of double flying geese block. All right, let's recreate that. Well, it has some odd-sized pieces. This is a 9" finished block with a 4 ½" finished centre square and 2 ¾" finished HSTs and double flying geese units.

I started by measuring the finished components of the double flying geese unit, doing some math, double and triple-checking that math, and then making two HSTs (two at a time method). I then sewed the same size triangles as in the HST on either side of it, and then added the final 'wings' in yellow, which are 2 ¾" finished, the same as those in the corners of the original block.

I had a very small amount left of the yellow and a few 3" squares of the navy from the original block, so I opted to use a royal blue, finding a very small bit of one of the blues in the black and blue 10" block beside it. Because I knew I'd be filling in around these double geese units somehow, and I would not have enough of the royal blue to do that, I opted to make the two triangles on either side of the HST in a similar royal blue, this rather cool Clothworks one with several shades of blue and black in it. The eggplant from the previous round 1 has quite a bit of black in it.

I made two and placed them in my first plan, the centre of each side.

and then tried a second thought, placing them in pairs in the corners.

I liked the outward 'pull' of direction my first thought was, which also meant I'd only have to make four, and since fabric was not abundant, that's where I went.

Next was more math, figuring out the length of the double border (another double) between the double flying geese. I had to make the yellow floral a bit narrower than the royal blue due to the meagre amount of fabric. Was I happy to have just, and I mean just, (part of one seam is 1/8" wide) enough of it.

The wavy royal blue was less than a fat quarter to start with so I did have to piece on of the eight double borders. I was able to line up the waves pretty closely so it's really not noticeable. For the corners I'd considered HSTs to echo those in round 1 or piecing a log cabin to make the double border continuous but I didn't have enough of the yellow floral, so I put four wavy royal blue squares there and called it good. There remains but a 7" square of the wavy blue and a little less than that of the original royal blue.

The quilt measures 32 ¼" right now, and it should be 32 ½", so coping strips are most likely in my future.

Almost time for PQ 17.3 to be released! Oh! I did fulfill a request from Dayna this past week as well:
Six new napkins in darker colours, three a lovely cotton gingham from which I've made myself a set a while ago, and three in  a beautiful solid linen.
