Follow Your Own Path QAL - Cutting Directions

This is when things start to really happen. I know a few of you have re-thought your fabric choices when I threw out the idea that all the arrow shadows could be one colour.

If you've decided to go that route, then for the baby quilt you'll need 1/2 yard and for the throw 3/4 yard. I will amend last week's instructions to include those amounts. I'd said it would be about four fat eighths or four fat quarters, so it was a close guess-timate! Okay, ready? Let's cut up some pretty fabric.

Some of you also noticed that the arrows go in two different directions, and that you can choose to have them point in two different directions, or all one direction, and that you'll have to decide just which direction you want them to go. Yes. Eventually. But not yet. The cutting directions work for either arrow direction!

Background Fabric (non-directional) Throw - cut the strips in the order given
Strips to cut                    Pieces to cut

11" strip

(16) 11" x 2" rectangles; (2) 8" x 2" rectangles

(6) 8" strips

From five strips: (15) 14" x 8" rectangles (three per strip)

From one strip: (1) 14" x 8" rectangle for a total of 16; (14) 8" x 2" rectangles for a total of 16

(6) 3½" strips

From four strips: (48) 3½" squares

From two strips: (32) 3½" x 2" rectangles

If you are going to have the arrow shadows all one colour:
Baby Quilt
  • 4 1/2" strip:  (16) 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangles
  • 3 1/2" strip: (16) 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" rectangles
  • 2 1/2 " strip: (16) 2 1/2" squares
  • (2) 6 1/2" strips: (16) 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles (12 per strip)
  • 5" strip: (16) 5" x 2" rectangles
  • 3 1/2" strip: (12) 3 1/2" squares; cut four from remainder of 6 1/2" strip for a total of 16
From fat eighths for the baby quilt, see the ezine. Here is a cutting diagram, not to scale, to help you:

From fat quarters for the throw:
From each of four light colours, cut
  • (4) 8" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • (4) 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
From each of four dark colours, if the shadows are not all one colour, cut
  • (4) 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles
  • (4) 5" x 2" rectangles
  • (4) 3 1/2" squares

Borders for the baby quilt are in the ezine. There are no borders for the throw, but feel free to add them if you so desire!

If you want to cut your binding now, either 2 1/4" or 2 1/2", cut five strips for the baby and six for the throw. If you want to do as I did and have two colours, then you'll need to cut three of each colour for both sizes.

Let me know if you have any questions. Happy cutting!

Here is my photo from the throw I've made with 'Believe in Unicorns' by Ann Lauer for Benartex. My background is Cotton Shot by Amanda Murphy, also for Benartex. Both lines are available in quilt shops and online now.

  1. So glad I finalized (I think) my colours last night. ☺

  2. You've picked some really fun fabrics for your next version.

  3. How do you register for this quilt along? I’m going to start!

    1. Hi Val-you are a no reply so I have no way of contacting you, so I do hope you come back to see this. You do not need to register; it is free. I am providing all the instructions for the throw size here on the blog, but if you want to make the baby quilt size then download the pattern from the e-zine. I gave you the link above and in the other quilt along posts. For the other posts, just look under the quilt alongs tab and you’ll be taken to ‘Follow Your Own Path’ QAL.

    2. where can I find the ezine? Can you help me??
      greeting Guilitta

I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment, as they make my day! I answer every one by personal email. :-) Unless... you are a "no-reply" blogger, which can occur for a few reasons. You can get around that by writing out your email within your comment so that I can answer you.
