It's time to put our nine blocks together.
1. If you've used two backgrounds, a light and a dark, alternate the five dark BG blocks with the four light BG blocks in a three by three layout. If you've made the Glowing Hearts version with the maple leaf centre block, then you can choose to have your four corners either with dark BG or light.
2. Sew a 1 ½" x 12 ½" sashing rectangle between the three blocks in the top row.
Repeat with the middle and bottom rows.
3. To make the horizontal sashing, sew two 1 ½" squares between three1 ½" x 12 ½" sashing rectangles. Make two sashing units.
4. Sew the sashing units between the top and middle row, and the middle and bottom row to form the quilt centre.
5. Measure your quilt centre. It should be 38 ½" square. If not, then you will cut your border pieces to fit your quilt. Cut one of the 1 ½" x WOF dark border strips into a 38 ½" long strip. Repeat with one of the 1 ½" x WOF light border strips. Sew one to either side of the quilt centre. Cut the remaining 1 ½" x WOF dark and light strips to 40 ½", and sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt.

In Winter Blues, the original version, I used an ombré fabric for the sashing rectangles. |
Notice that in Glowing Hearts I used just one fabric, bright red, for the sashing, and I placed the dark and light borders in opposite places to the original.
Remember to make a label. My backing is done, label applied and written on, but I haven't been at my sewing machine since Monday because the garden has called all week.
I made a 6" heart and appliquéd it to the back of my quilt. Why is it orange and not red? Well, if you are making the Glowing Hearts version, which is a nod to our national anthem, then you may want to consider Canada's actual, true history, one of colonialism and stolen lands. America and Australia have very similar histories to ours. Every September 30 is National Orange Shirt Day here in Canada, and so my sewing an orange heart label shows my recognition of Indigenous pride but also of reconciliation and even more, the MMIWG movement. I acknowledge the horrific acts my ancestors did on this land, and I am respectful that his land really does not belong to me, that I am a caretaker of it, just as it takes care of me. But it's much more, which you can read about in the article, Why Orange For Indigenous: A Deeper Look.
I will pop back in a few days (maybe by Friday I'll have a finish!) with some quilting suggestions. Here are links to my other three versions:
Each one is quilted a little bit differently, and I suspect Glowing Hearts will be a little different yet again!
I have one more heart to make, and then on to the sashing! And good reminder about the label, too. I often forget those!
ReplyDeleteI guessed what the sashing might be &...............wow, I got it right, though I have put on a slightly wider border. Can't wait to see what everyone else has done. Thanks for this QAL, take care & hugs.
ReplyDeleteI love this so much. Mine is almost together!!! Won't get to quilt it until the beginning of June but it is one of the next (who am I kidding the next) on the long arm machine!
ReplyDeleteLove this set up!! I am still adding hearts - but I will get there!!!
ReplyDelete12 ♥s and 4 leaves together for top: check! Backing purchased: check! Had planned build a backing from stash, but just was not happy with the look. Oh well, at least the top was totally from the stash. Must remember to do a photo before I make the sandwich, just in case I do not finish on time. Anxiously waiting to see what Glowing Hearts, others have created!
ReplyDeleteI'll have a finished quilt top, but probably not quilted. It's been a fun quilt along!
