Yay for hardy, early spring flowers, like winter aconite that has been blooming for a week now. I am also grateful for the snowdrops I spied at the beginning of this week. They really give a person's spirits a lift.
I am grateful for the people online who freely give of their advice, tips, patterns, and activities. I love Project Quilting, and am so glad that my friend Pat @we10mom told me about it several years ago, even though I was too shy to join in at that time. This week I got to celebrate my deep love of the written word with my Standing Stones mini-mini.
You can read about it here.I am grateful for being a creative person, and having the means to express that creativity. By this I mean having a dedicated sewing room, having a sewing machine (okay several), having plentiful fabric from when I was teaching full-time, as well as from years as an Island Batik ambassador and Benartex Fabrics designer, as well as for published quilts, but for tools as well, and all that goes with the craft. I keep thinking of those left homeless due to the horrific earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, those in Ukraine whose homes have been destroyed by bombs, those in Pakistan whose homes were destroyed in the devastating floods. And here I sit, now in utter and complete darkness, since the power has just gone out for good. It was flickering off and on all evening. I've just heard a very loud crrrr-ACK! nearby, and think it may be a tree or a branch come down. Not good. I am on my phone's hotspot, so I will pause for now and finish this tomorrow morning to save my phone's power.
Thursday morning February 23 |
Well we got quite the ice storm. The power is still out and estimates are for it not to be back on until sometime this afternoon. My yoga class I teach at 6:30 am was cancelled because the entire town is without power. Lots of trees and branches down and lines down as well all over the city of Windsor and Essex County. We can hear snapping and cracking when we are out with the dogs, very unnerving. I am grateful for a gas stove and for a well-insulated home. We’ve only dropped to 16C in here though it’s not very cold outside, only -1. We never did get snow outside of a few pellets. I am grateful for cell service that allows me to still get this post out.
I really really liked a book I finished on Friday, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. I’m now into one I learned of through Leanne at Devoted Quilter, The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah and really enjoying it so far. Another terrific little book that I plan to buy for my personal library is The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse by Charlie Mackery. Beautiful messages and drawings are in it. I first saw it on Instagram. Highly recommend for the ‘I Like’ peeps and well, for everyone who’s in need of a little lift of the spirits.
As for TV I highly recommend Down to Earth on Netflix. We watched Season 1 over a year ago and are now halfway through Season 2.
I am loving a new soup, made by a company in BC, Happy Planet. I got the Moroccan Chickpea, yum.
I like the way this block is shaping up!
This is one that I saw on Yvonne’s, Sew Yummy blog a couple of years ago. I started making it as a leader/ender project all throughout last year. I finally have enough paws to start making the blocks. It will be a donation for H2H; I hope to finish it by June! I’m still doing it as a leader/ender. It’s 2” finished 4-patches with 3” two-at-time HSTs. One-inch finished sashing.
I’ll close for now so I conserve my phone power. You can find other gratitude and general ‘I Like’ posts at LeeAnna’s blog, Not Afraid of Color.
I hope your power gets restored quickly, Sandra. I'm also grateful for the warmth around me as we are getting a big snow event here. We have blizzard conditions predicted for Friday which has never happened in the 15 years we have lived in the area. That said, ice scares me and I hope the roads aren't too bad and things can thaw out soon for you. Also: I 1,000% agree about burying power lines. It seems an obvious solution!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am so thankful for a snug, warm house, and lots of personally made quilts to wrap up in on these snowy days! Hope the ice didn't do too much damage. We have underground wires here, and it does deter the power outages. How is your sweet Xena doing? She looks very well-behaved in your photo! That is a beautiful bear paw block! I have those on my someday list. So many fun choices to sew!
ReplyDeleteOh I so hope your power comes on soon. We haven't seemed to suffer much here in Hamilton, but it does look treacherous out there. Your bearpaw block is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra! I started an email to you asking about your 'weathah' and then...earth to Linda!...thought, go to mmmquilts and see if you have a posting :-) AND better still, look at your latest postings and projects! I wonder if the ice has melted?! Oh my heart, your Calanais Standing Stones mini-mini is out-of-this-world incredible! I clicked on your link and will read about them. And your latest project... I mean, WOW...I'm in Awe. I shouldn't be in such an Awe-state after all the beautiful, amazing work of yours I've seen...and have!...every night so sweetly, beautifully comforted, but how can I help but not be in Awe! I know I'm always over-the-top with my expressions but yuh, I can't help it. You're extraordinary...and well, if you don't think so, it only makes you more extraordinary! 😁
ReplyDeleteWe got 6" of snow but no freezing rain certainly it's pretty although destructive. I agree I'm grateful to live in a safe country where the weather is the only real hazard. Have a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteice, ick. We have cold and snow, but low is above 0 tonight, warmer than last night. Milo's even reluctant to walk. I baked, then sewed staying off our ice.
ReplyDeleteyour pup is a handsome boy, thanks for the show rec. LeeAnna
I do hope your power comes back on soon Sandra. We are back in the deep freeze here as well; -15c as I’m writing this, but no power outages so far. I love your standing stones mini and the scrappy bear paw block is too cute. It will be a perfect H2H quilt. Thank you for the great book suggestions. 😉 Carol

No power sucks, hope it wasn't off too long. We had snow, ice pellets and on top of that freezing rain...uck...uck..uck
ReplyDeleteI'll take a snowstorm over an ice storm any day. I sure hope your power is back on by now; if not, soon! Nice post, Sandra!
ReplyDeleteThank you for he flower picture. It gives me hope. I might see snowdrops by April.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra! Nuts to losing power and preach. Why on earth don't they bury the lines??!! Good grief. Such a simple solution. We had .75" of ice Wednesday - probably the same storm that hit you. I don't ever recall anything like that before. Xena is sure sitting like a good girl having her picture taken, even though she wasn't the point. She didn't know that! I love how your paws are coming together. That will be a fun quilt. Here's to hoping your power is back on without any issues. {{Hugs}} a bunch. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteAnother great Gratitude post & losing power can be a real pain, but lucky you were able to finish this post. Love the paws block & hope by the time you get this comment all will be Ok again. Take care and hugs.
ReplyDeleteSo grateful we didn't lose power this winter. Lots of snow the last two months including 6" yesterday. It just keeps coming. That rodent who saw his shadow (and shall remain nameless) did not make my "best friends list". However, maybe there will be more water this summer. Reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Didn't think I'd care for it but it is interesting. Hope your weekend is dry and electrified!
ReplyDeleteHope you have power back now and the ice has all gone. We had an ice storm when we lived in Mass. I couldn't understand why no one was letting the school buses out of the depot - so I did :-) I soon learnt why no one was, huge pieces of ice were peeling of the roofs of the buses and crashing down on to the road. I didn't see the aconite just Zena - had to go back and look :-)
