Take Two - Eden Quilt

Like a bug bite you just have to itch, I just had to make the second quilt with the Eden and Blenders 10" squares. I don't have any in-process photos, just a few finish ones.

This one is going to be a comfort quilt, most likely destined for the Windsor Sexual Assault Centre. I give them one or two quilts each year.

Zephyr

I’ve turned to my modest stack of layer cakes, aka 10” squares to get them used up and into quilts. This one is a stack of 14 bought from Connecting Threads several years ago. Inside were 16 squares! This is a Rashida Coleman Hale line by Cotton & Steel supplemented with a few solids.

The impetus for making this quilt is twofold: first, way back in April I made a mental note of the block Yvonne Quilting Jetgirl made for a charity quilt block drive she is a part of, and two, I needed something mindless, fast and satisfying to sew after all the work, mental and sewing, put into the release of my latest pattern, Diamond Baby.

Diamond Baby Pattern Release and Bright Spark Quilt

I have the rights back to release my design that was featured in issue 70 of Make Modern. I am so pleased to release this pattern that can actually put quite a dent in your white, cream and beige strings. May I present Diamond Baby, now on sale in my Etsy shop!

I get a little fizz of a thrill every time I see that photo. So glad I was able to take some pretty great photos of the quilt at Fishermen’s Cove in the Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia.

Celestial Déjà Vu

Déjà vu indeed. If you are having that kind of moment when you see this quilt, your memory is correct! I  one very close to this earlier this year for a Project Quilting challenge. I called the first one Circadian Rhythm. I liked it so much, and I had enough of the Celestial fabric, that I planned to make another.

Besides, I had cut too many triangles for the first one!

Artemis

Artemis, a quilt I designed (inspired by an email convo with my friend Rose) in honour of the Artemis II expedition in April, is finished and ready to be hung on a wall in my home. You can read the story behind it in this post about the flimsy.

We went for a little drive on Sunday, trying to find an appropriate quilt for this full moon quilt. I had thought of the Windsor Astronomical Society observatory, but though MacGyver had mapped it, we were unable to find it. We also knew there wasn’t much chance of getting near it as it was closed and locked on a Sunday. I thought of the giant grey rocks at the Leamington Marina, so that is where the last photos were taken. We did stumble upon another pretty cool backdrop for a glamour shot.

With An Open Heart

Well, I don’t make my plan A in time for the Project Quilting deadline but plan B did get done. However I was not going to let plan A sit idle! I’m so very happy I pulled this too-long-on-the-shelf bundle out and went for it, despite knowing it was a bit of a reach. I am even more happy that I finished it!

The warm sunshine made for a beautiful outdoor shot today.

Silent Sentinels

Although I managed to get my trees quilt finished on Sunday by 5:30 pm, I didn't get it done in time to take advantage of a couple hours of beautiful sunshine we had in the mid-afternoon. Luckily the clouds cleared this morning and I was able to do a photo shoot in fresh snow that we got overnight.

As I mentioned when I wrote about the flimsy, I bought Amanda Jean's Trees! pattern quite some time ago, before buying the main fabrics, and even when I did buy those three, I did not plan for them to be in this particular quilt. However... I am really pleased that the pattern and fabrics came together as they have! Simmering is a good thing, right?

Good King Wenceslas

I had a pretty good month for finishing quilts, especially those of the USO (Un-Started Object) kind. This is number three, the sister to Santa's Power, which I made in December 2022. I bought this wonderful border print, 2.5 metres of it, close to 20 years ago, knowing I would somehow design a quilt with the same Ohio stars pattern as in the king's/Santa's coat.

And, there it sat, for the next many years until I pulled it out in 2022 and made Santa's Power. I loved how it turned out; I had even bought the trees print in the same line to use as backing, and even bound that quilt with it, using it up completely, hooray.

Nordic Forest

This happy little quilt went together in no time from start to finish. 

Rufus is the perfect colour of a model for this quilt!

I bought these six fat quarters and a yard of the red in the same line a year or two before Covid. Funny how we measure time now that way, and like how is it six years ago that we were hearing the terrifying stories coming out of China, and then Italy in lockdowns...

But on to brighter cheerier topics! The quilt store had a kit which I think was a cushion, made out of these fabrics, but they had sold out of the kits, so I picked up fat quarters and figured no worries, I could figure it out myself. Sadly, I did not write anything down, probably because I intended to make it right away. Which, clearly did not happen. 

Kindred Spirits

Kindred spirits, the name of my Sewcial Bee Sampler is done! This is a Quilt Along designed and hosted by Sharon Holland and Maureen Cracknell that started in the summer of 2017. I started the blocks about six months later when my friend Tish @tishnwonderland asked if I'd like to make them with her and her husband We made the first blocks on January 1, 2018.

I never realized until after I was cropping this photo, how perfect the bed of orange leaves are under the quilt!

 

We made a few over the next few months, sewing 'together' sometimes texting as we sewed, sometimes FaceTiming. Tish lives in West Virginia, and I am in Ontario. We first met in a New Quilt Bloggers group back in 2015, but we have met up in real life a few times. She's most definitely a kindred spirit: love of quilting, love of free-motion quilting especially, love of pibbles (at the time she had two pitties, brothers, and I had one, Rocco), a love of nature, and reading, and more.

I took these two photos in a favourite place near my house, Kennedy Woods. This first area by the parking lot is called The Sugar Bush because of these massive sugar maples throughout it.

Cheerio!

I have a finish on a Friday! Here is Cheerio!, a collaborative effort between my friend Cathy and me. 

Hot off the ... sewing machine last night!

Isn’t it just so bright and cheery? Cheerio! was the original name of this design which I did for Island Batik quite a few years ago. When I released the pattern, I renamed it Sunset Strip, because the batiks I used evoked colours of the sunset. This quilt now, it’s definitely got a Cheerio! vibe: a common salutation in England, an ‘o’ shaped cereal, and of course, this cheery quilt. The pattern is available in my Etsy Shop. It has two sizes, this baby quilt size and a throw.

Tropical Twist

May I present my first finish of October. Tropical Twist is done and ready to be listed in my Etsy shop.

A bit of a tropical setting sets off the vibrant colours of the batik fabrics in this quilt. It feels so good to get a pretty stack of batik fat quarters off the shelf and into a quilt. 

Back in my Sewing Room

Do you find that after you've been away for a week or two, it's hard to get back into the swing of sewing unless you've left mid-project? I had everything tied up before we left other than quilting the Tropical Puzzle quilt. That entailed sewing the backing yardage, so that is the first thing I did. I have the perfect backing, a Wilmington Fabrics piece I'd picked up in the clearance section of Sew Sisters about... eight years ago, knowing it would be a great back somewhere.

This quilt is it. Here is the first little bit. I saw a cool pantograph in an older quilting magazine on a Christmas quilt that I quite liked and thought I could probably free-motion. It doesn't look too much like the panto, other than big swirls, in continuous S shapes, but I'm liking it and I think it's perfect with the tropical theme: swirling winds through palm trees. I'm using Hobbs 100% wool with Connecting Threads 50 wt cotton in Sky, love.

Project Quilting 16.4 Diamond Girl

Well? Did that title do to you what it does to me every single time? Give you an earworm? Seals and Crofts’ song from 1973? I may be dating myself but I’m okay with that. That year was a special birthday for me: I became a teenager.  So this current year holds another special birthday, gulp. I'll let you do the math! 

Here is my finished table runner for the fourth challenge of project quilting, which I’ve named Diamond Girl.

The challenge this time was to make a project where the dominant colour is the colour of your birthstone. I am born in April, so my birthstone is a diamond, which is colourless! That caught me for a hot minute. Well, I’m sure many of you, like me, think of white when you think of diamonds, and silver, gold and sparkle, which is why I made a predominantly white runner with silver sparkle in the background fabric.

Jasper Quilt Finish

I have another finish which makes two in a week! I figured I’d be able to get the Jasper quilt quilted between Project Quilting challenges, and SAHRR prompts and I’m so happy that I did. If only the weather had cooperated for better photos, but oh well, I can always add in one or two when the sun decides to shine on us again.

As you may recall, this quilt is going to my cousin Val, who lives in Jasper. As you may also recall, the town of Jasper was evacuated last summer due to a raging wildfire that roared through the town, destroying one third of the homes, various buildings and businesses over the course of its rampage. Val’s home was one that was burned to the ground. 

Project Quilting 16.3 Seacliff Beach

I think this is my favourite Project Quilting make ever and I’ve had several favourites, Winter Blues just last time! Here is Seacliff Beach, my lake quilt that holds my love of my favourite beach and marina, Seacliff, on Lake Erie.

I’ve had these fabrics for a few years, just before Covid to be more or less exact. Most were bought on one fun quilt shop trip. A couple were added, then subtracted, then substituted to become the final rendition you see here.

Two Big Bellies

On Instagram I alluded to making two new cushions, both of them bellies. The first is Santa Baby, designed by Kelly Young of My Quilt Infatuation. I've intended to make one since I first saw her post back in 2018!

Tammy's Quilt

My friend Tammy asked me earlier this week if I would be able to quilt a quilt for her father-in-law. She needed it done pretty quickly, within three weeks because she wanted to take it to him when they go to Montreal before Christmas. Not a problem, I said. There was nothing on the frame, my bear quilt was at a 'contemplating' stage, and the baby quilt I've been asked to make is a 'no rush' make. I got it done for her in two days.

I was a bit hesitant since I've only ever quilted one quilt onto a plush fabric without batting between the layers, and I've never quilted a batiks one onto plush. There was one small issue, which Tammy was fine with.

Goose Dance Finish

Goose Dance is finished! I knew I was going to quilt my fat flowers design with some loops but I decided to add swirls with hooks as well. It was done in next to no time. 

Why do I take a quilt out from under the Bernina where I’ve finished the binding, and throw it around on the ground for photos? 🤷🏻‍♀️ It works!

Another Positive Flow Totebag

If you saw my post on Instagram on last Monday, September 23,  of the two sides of a totebag that has been calling my name for months, then this finish will come as no surprise.

This is one of three projects in my Positive Flow pattern which is available in my Etsy shop. I had originally wanted to make a Fall-themed bag using a block from my soon-to-be-released quilt pattern, and I pulled out this assemblage of fabric chunks I’d put together almost a year ago with the idea of making a bag for my shop. Well, out the window went the new bag, and, scampering around like the squirrel she is, in came this bag, begging to be made.
