SAHRR Finish: You're Golden

Because I'm planning on donating this, and hopefully as a comfort quilt to someone in need, I wanted a sunshine-y, upbeat, pretty flowers type of name and after pondering for a bit on the yellow that shines all the way through the quilt, 'golden' came to me, and then the expression, "You're golden," meaning you're good, you're not at all wrong, you're fine.

It was extremely windy today, and incredibly foggy all morning. I feel at times as if I live by the sea when the fog comes rolling up the street and over and around the trees and houses. I guess a Great Lake is an inland sea, and it does create its own weather. The sun came out in the afternoon, so I was able to get some good outdoor shots.

SAHRR Round 6 Quilter's Choice

At first I was not liking this prompt from Anja at Anja Quilts because I like the challenge of having a specific direction in which to go. However, knowing that I wanted to end with the floral trellis border print that brought the original four blocks together, made me think to just get over myself and do that! So today was the day to measure and cut and make borders.

I had to quick take the shot as it was fairly windy all day today, even at supper when I zipped outside to take a photo while we still had daylight.

SAHRR Round 5 Two Colours

This time it was Gail of QuiltingGail, the creator of this fun round robin activity, who chose the prompt for this week's round. She asked us to use just two colours in this round. I already had the one purple, a marbled-ish berry, and I decided to put a lighter blue with it.

It definitely brightens up the quilt!

SAHRR Round 4 Show Off Our Curves and Another Publication

Round 4 came from Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts. She asked us to show off our curves. I've had lots of fun over the years with improv curves, and a cool method that uses the bias to make fancy curves, but would you believe I've never made a traditional curves block à la Drunkard's Path? Out came the Betty Crockerass curves templates! 

Another one of the many things I love about Project Quilting and SAHRR is the challenges and prompts that push me to make the time to try something I've always wanted to try. I've done bajillions of set-in sleeves over the years along with the improv curves, so doing this block was actually really easy. Here is where my SAHRR sits right now.

SAHRR Prompt 3 Animal Kingdom

This one gave me pause (paws--ha--just thought of that as I typed). Emily of The Darling Dogwood was our 'director' this week and she asked us to look to the animal kingdom for inspiration, be it animal named blocks, appliqué of an animal, pieced block that looks like an animal or animal fabric. Once again, Kathleen's post was a good one to get the creative brain juices flowing. After round 2, I had a tentative plan to somehow extend the double flying geese into this round to accentuate the diagonal 'pull' they gave. I also had planned to incorporate purple into this round. Here is where it is.

SAHRR Prompt 2 Make it a Double

Happy Full Snow Moon and first of February. When I first read Kathleen's prompt on Tuesday for this week, 'Make it a double,' I immediately thought of a double-double. Like 'Make it a double,' it's referring to a drink, though non-alcoholic. A doubles-double is Canadian speak for a Tim Horton's coffee with two cream and two sugar. 🫶

So we were to incorporate the idea of double, or two, in or round this week. I let that thought simmer while I spent the bulk of the time since working on my upcoming pattern in Make Modern. I took a break from the computer on Saturday to work on my SAHHR, since the PQ 17.3 challenge is released on Sunday. Here is where my SAHRR sits at present after this week's prompt.

Arabesque Pattern Release

It's been a minute or three since I've had a new pattern out, but here I am with one more for 2025. Many of you will remember my SAHRR this year, and several said it would be a great pattern. So here she is!

Something I realized as I wrote up the pattern is that because the rounds (all seven of them) are 3" blocks or widths, you can really go wild with this pattern, and switch them around to create a totally unique personalized quilt! I told my pattern testers to feel free to do just that!

Oh, and of course, Arabesque is on sale all weekend for just CA$10.🤩

SAHRR #2 and RSC

While I was sewing up the throw version of my newest pattern, I started sewing the blocks together for my SAHRR #2. This was the one where instead of doing a round each week according to the prompt, I made a block. I ended up with seven blocks, so of course I had to make two more for a 3 x 3 set.

It turned out so well! I’m so happy to get that striped heart that is in the centre out of the orphan block drawer and into such a pleasing quilt.

I couldn’t be happier and more over the moon with this finish. Who knew it would end up so pretty, and, as people have commented and I agree, that it looks as if it was planned from the get-go!

SAHRR Finished Flimsy

I am just so darn happy to show you my finished flimsy for my SAHRR project #1!

Sorry for the inside shot but once again it was crazy-windy (hello, it's spring and I live basically on the shore of a Great Lake)! There was no sun today but at least I had some natural light on the design walll to photograph this beauty. 

SAHRR Round 5

This week the prompt came from Brenda at Songbird Designs. She asked us to make quarter or half log cabins. For project number one, this really stomped me, but I am so grateful for the other hosts as well as other participants who share inspiration. Here is where this first quilt sits in its fifth round.

I’m not sure what’s going to go between the floral squares so I’ve left it so that I can either incorporate week six prompt there or extend somehow the week five into week six prompt.

SAHRR Round 1

For this round we were to make a King's Crown block or any block that starts with the same letter as our name. I decided to do a Snowball block, and the original thinking was to put one in each of the four corners, and keep this round fairly quiet as the centre block is pretty busy. Let’s see how that worked out.

Rainbow Fish SAHRR Complete

It was another fun year of brain work in the Stay At Home Round Robin hosted by Gail of QuiltingGail, along with several co-hosts who gave a directive each week as to what to do for that specific round. My forlorn fish and heart blocks have grown into this adorable baby/toddler quilt and I just love how it all came together.

When I drove down Main Street earlier this week, I spied that mural and thought I think I should use it for a quilt photo of my fishies quilt! Thanks to some ‘rough surface’ tape, I was able to tape it to that wall. Don’t worry: I first checked in a small corner that it wouldn’t harm the mural. Eeee! I did a little squeal when I stepped back to snap the photo. It is good!

SAHRR Round 6 Letters and Numbers

And just like that, another Stay at Home Round Robin is done. This was my second time participating, and once again, I really enjoyed the work for my math and creative brain, and really enjoyed where the quilt ended up, as much a surprise for me as those watching!

SAHRR Round 4 Square in a Square

I had intended to add more fish in a subsequent round, and this round was perfect for it! Brenda of Songbird Designs is this week’s host who gave us the directive: add Square in a Square blocks in this round. 

Along with the fish which are the SiaS block, I made three more plain SiaS blocks, pulling in two fabrics from previous rounds as well as introducing the bubbles shimmery water-like fabric.

Wild and Wonderful SAHRR Quilt

It's been some time since I wrote a post; I really didn't intend to take more than three weeks off blogging. Hope you check in on me on Instagram because I do post fairly regularly there. If you don't, I'll catch you up with Rounds 5 and 6 for the SAHRR, as well as what I was up to during one of the weeks:

Ahh, as on our previous two trips to the idyllic island of Cuba, I found several sources of inspiration for colour and design. It felt good to do something normal as well, though I did and will always wear an N95 mask on an airplane. All was well, and we've returned healthy and didn't catch anything, but that is thanks to masking on the airplane and in close quarters in the airports, as well as lots of outdoor time, even eating en plein air, which I love any day!

Fleurs

When I signed up for Gail's Quilting Gail PHD programme, I didn't know just how gratifying it would be. Finishing (finally! seven years later) Fleurs is the pinnacle of 2021 so far for me. I avoided it all year, and probably had it not been for joining in with Leanne @devotedquilter #wipsbegone2021 , I may not have got this huge quilt done. But done she is!

A quick refresh: this was a 'self' round robin. We sewed on our own quilts, and each month for seven months, the guild executive told us what that month's round would involve. I liked the challenge, and I liked sewing on my own quilt. I've been in two round robins: the first I was bitterly disappointed and the second, well, let's just say that not all contributors put in the same amount of care, thought and work, though in the second experience it was just one person, not several as in the first experience. 

Fleurs took me a lot longer to quilt than I'd anticipated! I loaded it September 11 and took it off October 17! I need to finish another UFO this month (gulp) or two in November to get back on track for 12 UFO finishes this year.

What's Up

What have I been up to besides working on my 94 Quilt? Well, a few things, though none of them have given me any finishes for a while.

You know that I've decided to hop on Leanne's @devotedquilter Instagram bandwagon of finishing WIPs during the final 100 days of 2021.

I started with the biggest most time-consuming goal of the three, but tbh, all three are pretty big, time-consuming goals. In for a penny...

OMG and PHD: fleurs

First of all, confession: I did not get a Project Half Done, aka PHD, to the finished stage in August. However, I am one ahead so I'm still on track to finish 12 UFOs. For September, I aim to fulfill my PHD requirement and set this as my OMG: finish 'fleurs', a 'self-round robin' I made when I was part of the Erie Shore Quilt Guild.

The criteria for this was to choose an orphan block for the centre, (mine was the hand-appliquéd Rose of Sharon) and then each month a member of the executive would specify what style of quilting would be for that particular round. For example, the first round, in October 2013, was 'stripes', the second round was flying geese, and so on. It went on for seven months. I finished mine in December 2014, after I was no longer a member. It has sat, ever since. (red face of shame)

Mini Round Robin

It's all Cindy's fault.  She writes at Stitchin' At Home; we met in last summer's New Quilt Bloggers Group.  Cindy asked Julie of Pink Doxies fame if she'd like to do a swap over the summer with a few friends.  Julie ran that thought by me, and I said cool, but how would we swap in a group...hmmm, we had a think...and then I asked, what about a round robin idea?  Make it small so it's quick.  Easy and fun.  Went back to Cindy.  Thumbs up.  So I asked Tish, of Tish's Adventures in Wonderland, if she wanted in, and she immediately said, "Cool!"  And thus we had our group of four, already good friends thanks to several hops and activities and emails and iMessages and FaceTime.  Oof-da!!  :-)

I don't believe anyone in QBL has done a Mini Round Robin!

So what are our guidelines?  We determined that in order for it to be a Mini, it should have a finished perimeter of approximately 24" a side.  With four of us in the group, that meant each round should total about 6" finished.

This 1/3 yard fabric was hanging on my sewing chair, not sure why or when I pulled it out, but last night it told me it wanted to be the centre; all I have on the selvage is (Ro) Gregg for Northcott

The centre block would be a maximum of 6" finished, but it could be less than that, and it didn't have to be square.  You could have a 5" finished block, or a rectangle, or a triangle, hexagon.... Each round would total 6" maximum finished, so 3" finished if doing a round on all four sides, or 6" if only adding to two sides, or 7" if the centre was only 5"...and the endless creative possibilities begin!

We have to have our first block in the mail on May 31, shuffle to be determined by good old MacGyver.  The first round has to be done and posted about at the end of June, in the mail June 30, Round 2 by July 31, Round 3 by August 31, and finished quilting and final post Show 'n Tell in early October.

Final decision:  Northcott quilt shops, Nana's Abstractions by ?, Julie's gorgeous hand-dyed batik, and Good Neighbors by Connecting Threads, a fitting background

How hard can it be to whip up a 6" block?  I had a couple of ideas, but let them percolate over this past rather eventful month on the quilting and on the personal fronts.  One of the events was my mum requesting a quilt to take to my aunt in England.  Another was Lara's blog hop, (that'll take you to the schedule) for her first book, Crafted Appliqué, (no affiliation) which resumes tomorrow and culminates in some AHH-mazing giveaway prizes June 4!!  And then I decided I couldn't send my Auntie Joyce a quilt without sending one for her husband, my Uncle Frank, who is my mum's brother.  The quilting is finished on it; I had a BLAST quilting...

Third pass of wavy line FMQ motifs along some of them.  My Muse and I, along with Avril, were in such sweet harmony (ha, pun not originally intended). I think I may have created an original FMQ motif with the music notes under Christina Cameli's 'Leafy' motif.  Eeep!

and might have not torn myself away from it until it was completely done last night, which is why I got a rather late start to actually making my 6" block.  I might have also changed my plan...

Pat Sloan's Row 1 block in American Patchwork & Quilting, appealed to me as a great way to showcase the quilt shop fabric. Also, traditional meets modern with both older and new fabrics, all in a 'new' block!

It was 12" finished, but how hard could it be to make it 6"?  Cut everything in half, right?

Block on the left is the correct size; block on the right will grow up into a ... 'nother mini?! That or a pincushion!

BZZZ!  Nope!  It was soon apparent that we had a problem, Houston.

You do cut the finished measurement of each section in half, and from there add back on the 1/2" for the seam allowances.  After 9 pm, my brain doesn't fire on all cylinders at the best of times, but add in the menopausal brain farts I am plagued with, and the plan goes awry.  I went to bed.  5:30 comes early...

I was stressing about going to yoga this morning when I should be re-doing my block and taking photos and writing the post, and then I thought, 'Sandra!  It's a blog!  You aren't going to be docked pay!' And so I did what yoga teaches: live in the moment.

It's a beautiful thing, doing yoga, making that 45-minute drive back home, which is when the lightbulb first went on, grabbing a coffee at home, and going straight to work... and it WORKED!!

1.25" squares on 1.5 X 3.5" rectangles; direction matters!

The trickiest part was those little squares.  MacGyver and I talked this morning (after all he is a math guy):
Me: So I think I need to do a ratio to figure out the size of the little squares.  2 is to 2.5 as what is to 1.5?
MacGyver: Well you're talking 80%.
Me: 80%...oh! 20 out of 25! (translate it to teaching...ergo test scores...and I am up to speed)
MacGyver: Yeah.  So the second number would be 1.2.
Me: Like 12 out of 15!  Hmmm...1.2 isn't going to happen...I'll have to do 1.25 and hope for the best.

I did a happy dance that it worked:

Woo hoo!  Wait...it's not square, and I knew it wouldn't be, because Pat Sloan has you add a 2.5X12.5 strip to one side of her block.  Hers are symmetrical; mine is not.  Direction mattered in the placement of the squares with the green triangles, and in the subsequent placement of the rectangles with green triangles.  Drat.  Well, I could leave it as a rectangle; our guidelines had determined that.  Did I want to do that to the next person after the math crap I'd just gone through?  Uh, no.

It would not do to have the house off to one side by adding a strip as per Pat's plan.  Could I split the strip and sew half to each side?  We determined that using the 'X' background fabric would make it look like there was a mistake.  Tried the green (how I adore this hand-dyed by Julie fabric!!) hmmm, not quite right; what about trying the blue? Yep, we both liked the blue.  And so it is!  6.5" square, ready to be sent off.

MacGyver did his shuffle work this morning, so my block is now going to be mailed to Tish.  You can check out the other blocks here:
