My first project, and I was only going to do one (best laid plans) is the one from a Quick Quilts magazine. I'm making three blocks in the colour of the month, four for a few months to total 30 blocks for a five by six layout.
I think two of the biggest reasons I love making scrap quilts is for all for the memories the pieces evoke as well as the depth you get with the variety of shades and tones and textures. Within these three blocks I see two QALs: my first, Freefall, and Follow Your Own Path, a Mariner's Compass quilt I made for Dayna, two quilts I designed for a couple of blog hops for Benartex, my time as an Island Batik ambassador, a quilt I made for my mum's 80th...and that doesn't include the history of the black fabrics!
This is why it's hard to let go of my scrap quilts!
Project #3 came about when I was thinking of what I could do to reduce the strings. Placemats barely put a dent in them, nor did the quilts I did in 2021 for the RSC, Delia,
and Rainbow Bowties.
I just love this quilt. So far it hadn't found a home, but as of typing up this post, I think it may have. |
I wanted to make giant blocks so that nine would make a decent size throw. Here are my scrappy strippy stars at this point!
The centre is an 8" finished improv square using my smallest scraps. So far these squares have used up all the little scraps in every colour so far except for the greens, despite making a dark and a light! For some reason I have a ton of small scraps of green. The star points are made from my strips and white larger scraps. The four corners are beige or cream, to use some of those scraps up but also to give some more movement to the quilt. I may write up a tutorial for the quilt once the top is done or nearly done.
Does this third project make a sizeable dent in the scraps and strings? Nope. But wow, do I love how the quilt is shaping up!

Both your RSC projects are going to make wonderfully colorful quilts. I'm not sure why using scraps seems to generate more scraps, but I beginning to think that scraps one of those infinity problems.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE those scrappy stringy stars, Sandra!!!
ReplyDeleteThe scrappy strippy stars look fantastic together, and I think the variation in the background just adds to the sparkle. :)
ReplyDeletei understand what you mean about our scrap fabrics in our quilts- they bring back so many memories, and i know that i, too, sometimes (too many times?) have trouble giving them away...
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra! Gosh, I love Delia. Is that a card trick pattern? Your purple blocks have turned out nicely - it will make another lovely finish with all the different colors. I never think to give string blocks a try but your stars are certainly tempting! I hope you're doing well. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteSigh... it is a mystery... No matter how many scrap pieces I uses up... there never seems to be any fewer in the box...
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm going to love whatever this purple one turns out to be!
Your bowtie quilt just sparkles, Sandra! I love the stars, too. Great way to use the crumb centers!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all your scrap stars & the top lot of blocks too. My scrappy piles are humongous and even though I do lots with them, especially some recent QALs, including my houses for your QAL, they still seem to multiply, so I'll have words with them, I think. I met Lara on Friday & I'll pop through an email soon. Take care & hugs.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quilts are ones my mother made from scraps left over from the clothes she made for me -- so many memories.
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful quilts. I've seen them before and still think they are wonderful. When I was showing something at guild a while back, I said that many of my quilts have the same fabric as I can't throw away any scraps. The quilts remind me of those bigger quilts made as gifts for a loved one. I think you could label me a hoarder because I can toss the scraps.
ReplyDeleteAll of these are great ideas for using small scraps and strings. I especially like the stars. My strings box is overflowing and I need to put the crumb blocks to work, too. Of course, I have to stay home long enough to get some sewing done. And the garden will be calling soon. So much to do, so little time (why do retired people not have more time?)
