I get a little fizz of a thrill every time I see that photo. So glad I was able to take some pretty great photos of the quilt at Fishermen’s Cove in the Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia.
For this pattern release, I remade it in bright primary colours! I named this version Bright Spark.
The design originally came about during a Project Quilting challenge in 2025 which was to make a project where the dominant colour was your birthstone. Mine is a diamond, so I immediately thought of white, but I knew that when refracting light they can glint a bit pink, pale blue, pale green, and pale yellow. So that is where it started.
That backing?! Just too much fun, and one I’m so glad to have found a quilt for it. I’d originally bought it as a possiblity for my husband’s Skulls on Fire quilt. It has funny birds, giraffes, donkeys and more across it.
Unfortunately, I did not have enough for the length of the quilt, BUT, framing it with another wild piece bought at the same time, one which I did use in Skulls on Fire, was perfect, and used it all up as well!
Instructions are not included for this pieced border, but instructions are included for the Diamond Girl runner.

However, after making three blocks, I felt the dominant colour was not white, so I put the diamonds on a white background fabric that has embossed silver geometric designs in it. That’s what I went with, though I loved where the top three blocks were going, and ended up making the flimsy, submitting it to Make Modern, and getting it published in the last issue.
When I had to submit instructions, I remade it so I could double-check measurements, amounts, etc. I went with a primary colours bright vibe.
I used cream, white and tan strips as in the first quilt; however, instead of the neutral palette for the solid diamonds, I went with some turquoise, green and grey prints. I love those raccoons wearing turquoise shades, another of the stack of 50 fat quarters I won two years ago from The Fabric Nook. I only have nine or ten left now. Yes, there was a lot of piecing to get that 1" finished inner border of the leftover fat quarter of those raccoons but it was worth it.
I stitched the entire quilt top but for the final borders on my little girl, my 1947 Featherweight, Tilly with Essential 100% cotton thread from Connecting Threads. The borders I did on my Bernina since the extended table that came with it has the markings for mitred seams.
I quilted it with the same motifs as Diamond Baby.

| I took this shot to show how well the quilting motif works to blend all the various strips. |

| Interestingly, a light green that matched the Pear Kona worked for all the meadering and ivory for the ruler work. |

Once it was bound, with another of my long-ago-future-binding purchases, this one by Timeless Treasures, rainbow ‘beads’ on black, I pinned it into my design wall to block it.
Pattern back:
Dire Straits' song, Twisting by the Pool popped into my head when I inserted this shot! Kind of fitting when Diamond Girl by Seals and Crofts was in my head when I named the pastel one!
