Follow Your Own Path - Second Set of Four Blocks

I've been seeing some beautiful fabric pulls for this quilt along, and I cannot wait to see more, as well as the first blocks being born. A linkup for showing your progress is at the end of this post. This week we will make four arrow blocks that point to the left.
As John Ross says, always think about where the light is coming from. In my mind the shadows are beneath the arrows.

Remember that the directions for the baby quilt can be found by downloading issue 15 of Modern by the Yard, which you can get by clicking the image. It's free.

Piecing the left-facing arrow blocks.

Abbreviations: BG - Background; RST - right sides together

Choose another colour family to work with to make the next four blocks. The diagrams will show dark and light orange.
1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four dark orange 3 1/2" squares and on twelve BG 3 1/2" squares. Place one of the dark orange squares RST on the left side of a light 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangle. Stitch on the diagonal; trim 1/4" away from the seam.
Press seams to the dark orange or open.

Repeat with the background 3 1/2" square, placing it on the right side of the light rectangle.

Make four of these flying geese (arrow points) units.

2. Make the dark orange arrow units following the above directions but using two BG 3 1/2" squares and the dark orange 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" rectangles.

You should have eight arrow points, four light arrows and four dark arrows.

3. Sew a BG 3 1/2" x 2" rectangle to a dark 5" x 2" rectangle along the short edge.

4. Sew a BG 8" x 2" rectangle to a light 8" x 3 1/2" rectangle along the long edge.
5. Sew the step 3 unit to the bottom of the step 4 unit having the dark orange on the left. Press seams to the light orange. Then sew the light arrow point unit to the left of the unit you just made.

6. Sew the BG 11"x 2" rectangle to the bottom of the step 5 unit.
7. Sew a BG 3 1/2" x 2" rectangle to the right side of a dark orange arrow point.

8. Sew this unit to the end of the step 7 unit. Your block should measure 14" x 8".  Make four.

Here are the components if you are making all the shadows in one colour.

Remember to save those cut away HSTs for a bonus project! If you're making the throw, and you have the 2.5" AccuQuilt HST die, you can very carefully use it to trim them ready for sewing:
It worked really well! The HSTs for the throw size will trim out at 2.5", (2" when they're sewn into the project), and the baby quilt ones will trim up to 1.75" and end up sewn at 1.25".

The main sponsor for this quilt along is Benartex. Kanvas and Contempo are under the Benartex umbrella. I love their fabrics, such variety, fine quality.

Two of the three fabrics I'm using in the blocks you see in this post are from two different lines of theirs. The floral is Color Calypso for Kanvas and the light grey background is Color Weave by Contempo. Both are from previous projects I designed for their ezine.

Needle and Foot Fine Fabrics is the other fabric store sponsoring my quilt along. Bernie has some beautiful curated bundles of fabric you should check out. Check out her Clearance section too!

Okay that's enough temptation for now! Have fun making these next four blocks. I'll be back next week with another four. 😇  In the meantime, here's the linkup to show your progress to date. If you're still sitting on the fence deciding whether or not to join in, or which fabrics to put together, you may find the inspiration you need in someone else's choices! The linkup will remain open until Saturday at midnight.

As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to email me: sandra at mmmquilts dot com or ask in the comments.

  1. Well I've cut out the arrows and shadows for the baby quilt and the throw. Hope to cut all the background fabric for both tonight; then I can start the fun bit of assembling the blocks :-) Might have a picture by Saturday - I'm praying for bad weather :-)

  2. I'm enjoying your progress with the different colourway & think mine is going to look a great big mishmash & it will be a bit on the odd side(giggle). I even have a name for it. I didn't take a photo of my fabric pull as I've used a 2 1/2" Raibows pack from Victorian Textiles & a pale grey background. I'll try & link this time. Take care & hugs.

  3. I'm following the baby quilt pattern, so my arrows are looking like the ones on the cover of the magazine! Just like always, you write a great pattern, Sandra - I'm enjoying it!
