94 Quilt: Blocks 43 - 49

I acknowledge that I am living on unceded territory of Anishinaabeg (Source: Canadian Encyclopedia) on the shore of erielhonan, (Iroquoian word meaning 'long tail') now called Lake Erie.

The post that explains my 94Quilt project is here.  Since July 1 I've been making a flying geese block a day as I read one of the 94 Calls to Action, its accompanying explanations and progress report, and links that go with each one.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is the main website with a wealth of information.

Beyond 94 is the CBC-created site that is an ongoing report card monitoring how we are doing with the calls.

Reconciliation

43. Adopt and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"The Liberal government passed legislation to implement UNDRIP in June 2021. But six provinces officially opposed the legislation, citing concerns that it would impact provincial laws and jurisdiction."

Bill C-15 received royal assent June 21, 2021. Guess what six provinces opposed it and wrote a joint letter to the Prime Minister? Quebec, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and New Brunswick. What do they all have in common? They're all led by a Conservative government. Read more at Beyond 94.

44. Develop a national plan, strategies and other concrete measures to achieve the goals of the UNDRIP.

The Liberal government passed legislation to develop an action plan within two years. (in Bill C-15)

45. Develop a Royal Proclamation of Reconciliation to be issued by the Crown.

Not started.

46. Develop and sign a Covenant of Reconciliation among parties to the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement.

Not started. Apparently discussion tables still meet according to the Anglican Church of Canada to vision what this may look like.

47. Repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and terra nullius and reform laws that rely on such concepts. 

It's worth checking into those two. We learned about it in the Indigenous Canada course I took last summer. These are concepts used to justify European sovereignty over Indigenous lands and peoples. 

Bill C-15 is a step in the right direction, and in the 2018 budget $51.4 million was committed to continue support moving us towards Reconciliation.

48.  Church parties to the residential schools settlement and other faith groups to adopt and comply with UNDRIP.

Sites, Articles, Books of Interest

Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson was a book I read in December. I lived in this book. Eden is also the author of The Trickster Trilogy, the first book which was turned into a very successful mini series on CBC Gem, both of which I also highly recommend. She weaves elements of Haisla folklore, Indigenous culture, and magic, and creates such an atmosphere that will stay with you for long after you finish her books.
