TGIFF: Positive Flow Tote Bag

Welcome to TGIFF - the linkup where we celebrate our finished quilt projects! Please honour the spirit of this linkup and only post finishes, thank you! If you would like to host TGIFF, the signup sheet and details can be found here.

Recently I made two tote bags as commissioned Christmas presents. Well, one of those who requested a bag for her BFF asked me a couple of weeks ago if I would make another one similar to it but for herself. Not a problem! I was in the process of making the heart quilt, Millie, so once that was done and sent off in the mail, I got started on the bag.
This one has the same main fabric A and B, but different fabrics for the plus blocks and front band than the one I made for S's friend.
I followed my own pattern again, which you can find in my Etsy shop, SandraJaneQuilts. It is called Positive Flow and has instructions to make the cover quilt in two sizes as well as this bag.

Once we settled on the fabrics for S's bag, I was off, and in no time had the quilted parts needed.
A variegated Essential Thread from Connecting Threads (affiliate link) was perfect for the quilting I did.

Here is the reverse side of the tote bag. I used the forest green batik from Island Batik that's in the bag body for the handles.

Inside view. I used a Sulky Holoshimmer metallic thread to topstitch around the top of the band and around the inside pocket. A little bling! I put magnetic closures inside to keep items secure inside.

I love combing through my stash and combining varied lines! I love how this bag flows from the rich burgundy and gold Jinny Beyer fabric to the Kona Bay trees fabric. The golden yellow floral is an older Northcott fabric, and the band is one from Hoffman International.
Can you spot the SF for S's initials?

Quilt Stats:
Pattern: Positive Flow tote bag by SandraJaneQuilts
Size: 20.5" wide x 16.5" high
Fabric: various as noted above
Backing: as above
Batting: Hobbs Silk Blend
Quilted: on Avril; 15 641 stitches
Threads: pieced with Aurifil cotton; quilted with variegated Essential cotton 50 wt; The Bottom Line in the bobbin.

I also made two makeup bags earlier this week. I got a custom order for a pink one, and when I get those, I like to make two similar so I can list the other. It doesn't take much more time to make two. I asked her if she'd like some red in it like the recent heart quilts I've made and she said yes.
The one on the left is sold

This one is for sale. Don't you love the sun square?!

I quilted them and topstitched the upper edge with a pink variegated Sulky rayon. I've started making these using Noodlehead Open Wide Pouch zipper application, and I like it! These are the first two I've listed using it.

The bags measure 9.5" across the top and are about 6" high. They hold a lot of stuff! You can purchase this bag here.

  5. Hi Sandra! I was just talking about you and your bags! We have a whole posse of cold brew coffee fans and I threatened that we needed to open a coffee/tea/tea cozy/quilted other things shop. Not going to happen but it's fun to think about. I just LOVE the name, Positive Flow Tote. WHO doesn't need a tote bag, first of all, and then one that has positive in its name?!! Great job. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. Wonderful bags! I do love the way the colors worked in the positivity flow bag. The little zips are fabulous as always! Happy Friday finishes...I don't have any this week, but rejoice for those who do!

  7. Your Positive Flow pattern obviously has lots of nice making options. I particularly like that tote bag. And those other zipper bags too! Can't have too many bags, right? Or at least enough to pass on to others. They do make great gifts.

  8. I have that Hoffman International fabric in the band. I made a bag with it before I knew about quilting ( I don't even think the instructions mentioned quilting). Love the plus bag, love the two makeup cases. Love the Noodlehead open wide pouch zip application, just genius.
