My Second Scrappy Strippy Stars

I am pleased to squeak in one more finish for September, a few hours before midnight lol. It’s one of my two Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects. This is my design, Scrappy Stars, which is a tutorial here

My original quilt was done on cream backgrounds with beige for patches. I decided to go dark with this one.

Basically you make a slab block with crumbs for the centre, and a strips block which you use to make the HSTs. The blocks are 16" finished so nine makes a nice throw-size quilt.

Gosh, if I let my eyes blur slightly (or take off my glasses lol) I can see more potential for the secondary pattern: make the four centre black diamonds one colour and make the others another...

I think the light and dark grey four-patches take away a bit from the stars shining (pun intended).

Here is the back. I channelled my inner Kelly of My Quilt Infatuation and pieced a back from fat quarters and chunks of black and white fabrics, a few of which I'd collected for two quilts: Float, made in a Splash of Colour QAL in 2018, and Shift, made for my nephew in 2015. Feels good to see the black 'under 1/2 yard chunks' drawer in my Sterilite organizer go down a fair bit!

I used Hobbs black 80/20 cotton/polyester for the batting, and did an all-over open meander and dot-to-dot stars in the full black diamonds. It's wonderful texture.

I went back to the Sterilite drawer for a binding and used up a piece with gold dashes for a little bling. I didn't have quite enough, so went to my scraps bin and found enough of the math print left for a couple more strips. You can see it in the photo of the back. It happened to land where I'd used that very fabric! I sewed it on by machine.

I used a dark grey Essential thread (Stone) for the quilting. It blended in well and will sink in even more to the black once I wash the quilt.

The fabrics shine against the dark background.

One more shot in Macgyver’s tropical oasis. His banana is 10’ 4” now! He gets regular compliments on it from multiple neighbours! The elephant ears are kuh-RAZY too. I should measure some of those leaves - the quilt is 48" for reference. Some of my impatiens are the size of the azalea bush! They are all happy since they got 2 cm of rain on the weekend thanks to remnants of Hurricane Hélène.

Quilt Stats:
Size: 48”x 48"
Fabric: scraps
Batting: Hobbs black 80/20 cotton/polyester
Backing: scraps
Quilted: on Avril: 41 260 stitches
Threads: pieced on both my Bernina and Billie, my 1947 Featherweight; quilted with Essential cotton 20858 Stone by Connecting Threads, Bottom Line in the bobbin

  1. I love all the colors and the way you use up the scraps. There is something therapeutic about sewing together pieces of fabric to make a bigger piece that becomes a beautiful and precious keepsake. Congratulations.

  2. Your post was so timely for me. I've finished up 3 quilts a few days ago for a new baby & his big brother (42" sq and 2- 52" x 63" big quilts that match and are VERY scrappy, made I Spy style so their parents can teach colors, animals, etc). While moving around the quilt room (and tidying up, which doesn't happen often) I realized how many containers of crumbs I actually have. On top of 4 very large salad containers of strips. I will be using your tutorial to use up as many of those as possible, into the required sizes. I would have just 'built' whatever sized blocks I could get out of each color, but your dimensions make it easier & make the best use of those scraps. I'm a 50 year self-taught quilter, and I still find ideas and tips everywhere. Thanks so much! Deb / California

  3. BTW - congrats on the HUGE banana plants! You must live in a little micro climate to have all those lovely plants survive over winter - had to check, you're in Canada! I was an exchange student while in high school & spent a year in Australia. My host family took all of us on vacation to Queensland and I fondly remember spending Christmas of 1973 under banana trees, and while there, being awakened one morning by my host father with a lobster in his hand. What a fun year that was! Almost didn't come back to America I loved Australia & my family so much. Deb / CA.

  5. Lovely Sandra & I've been using a lot of scraps lately too. If I can get photos onto this new (difficult) system, I'll try and do an updated post of "quilty stuff". Ah, have you seen photos of the BIG BANANA at Coff's Harbour? One of many big things dotted around Oz. Thanks for sharing, take care & hugs.

  7. This is gorgeous! I love that you found other scraps to finish the binding just right. Love the quilting you did on it too! Now, does your husband take those plants in or cover for the winter?

I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment, as they make my day! I answer every one by personal email. :-) Unless... you are a "no-reply" blogger, which can occur for a few reasons. You can get around that by writing out your email within your comment so that I can answer you.
