PQ 13.1 Postcard Pouch

It 's that time of year again! Project Quilting time that is, the brainchild of Kim of Persimon Dreams, hosted by her good friend Trish  @quiltchicken . The first challenge Trish dreamed up is called 'All the Colours'. As in use 'em all. In my last post I mentioned that I was going to once again host a Postcard from Sweden Quilt Along. Put that with all the colours, add in wanting to make a small gift for my niece, and boom! Postcard Pouch idea was born.

I used the Charm Square pouch tutorial, formerly available on Moda Bakeshop, that I've made at least a dozen times, substituted HSTs for the squares, based it on Kelly's Postcard from Sweden quilt, formerly available on Craftsy, tried Anna's technique at Noodlehead Open Wide pouch and another boom! It all came together beautifully.

The longest part of making the pouch (and I am still amazed by how much time it took, like two days' worth of sewing time) was pulling and cutting the squares, and then cutting them into triangles and placing them. I ended up taking a photo after making the first 4-patch 'pinwheel' I showed on Instagram so I could keep track of placement and direction of diagonal line.

This pouch is going to my niece Sheila in Alberta. She has a florist business as a sideline, and so I knew I wanted a colourful floral lining. By the way, you must check her out: Nature By Design Floral Artistry. If you're in the Edmonton area, and need flowers for any occasion (she does weddings, and has been featured in a magazine) she's your person!

So the lining is an older Michael Miller I had in my stash as a potential kaleidoscope blender. Sidenote: I've stopped saving these gajillion 1/4 and 1/3 yards that I collected over several years because really? I'm not going to make that many, if any, more kaleidoscopes😔. Furthermore, I've (mostly) got over the "yikes, I cannot cut into this presh-ussss fabric!" sentiment.

Didn't the 'open wide' zipper installation technique work beautifully? Fist pump! Note for my Canadian readers: I got the zipper pull, a clip with a ring attached, at Fabricland. I used the brown Aurifil for piecing and the variegated for quilting.

Here's the other side, identical. The quilting is simple: in all the ditches, and 1/4" to one side of half of the diagonal lines. If I make another (and I certainly want to) I may make side 2 in a reverse image, or pay attention to which angle side 1 ends up with so at the side seams they make v's. Minor detail but it's a thought.

Here's the bottom. Another thought is to mix up these squares for a similar side seam effect, though this looks kind of cool too.

A while after I took the above photos, the sun came out for a bit, so here's one last one in the sunshine.

I'm already wondering what the next challenge will be!

Quilt Stats:

Postcard from Sweden Quilt Along is happening! Come back tomorrow for the main post with the schedule. You can also check my Instagram @mmmquilts as well. Yes, there will be two shops (so far) carrying kits. Yes there are prizes! No the pattern is not available, (so please please do not buy it from disreputable rascals who are making money off her design) but yes, Kelly has given me permission to share it with participants.

  7. I will have to try the wide open pouch. Sure looks like a winner. I am curious how does one know if the person including Kelly's pattern with fabric is a scallywag or not? I bought a kit for this quilt because I was interested in the price point of the fabric and the pattern was included. Have a good week.

  9. Great pouch! FYI also for those in Canada, I've purchased some nice zipper pulls from the jewelry / beading section at Michael's. Some cute little charms you can just attach with a jump ring.

  10. What a brilliant little pouch - I love it. Funny, HST are one of those things, I make automatically from those required in patterns I am working on - 2 squares to make the required HST, and make a smaller HST,at the same time, from the part to be cut off. So it is a stash buster too. Thanks Sandra.
