Pop Star QAL The Final Parade!

Welcome everyone to another year of celebrating the end of my annual QAL, on the auspicious birthday of that famous Canadian, my Dad. 😍🥳

It never fails! June 15 seems so far off when the final steps to put the flimsy together are posted. Then suddenly it's here and it seems it was only a week ago, not a month, that that post happened. Such is the way of things though. My own quilt has been done for a few days. I had planned to post my quilt on June 14, giving it its own well-deserving post. I got some good early morning shots on June 14 as I'd had to wait a day while it dried on the design wall for blocking purposes. Then the evening turned out to be picture postcard perfect, so a trip to my happy place, Seacliff Beach and Leamington Marina walk was in order for a few glamour shots. I will link up the post here. Here is a sneak peek!

The light was perfect. More photos to come. Blue was my dad's favourite colour. I think he'd have loved this quilt.

I am just thrilled that the quilt I made looks identical to the one I drew in EQ8 and used for the QAL graphic!

A couple of bookkeeping items as they say. First of all, know that the linky party will be open for one entire week. This gives everyone a little extra breathing room to finish up. I mean life happens.

Second, I want to give you a little encouragement for how to quilt your quilt. Yes, I went to town on the throw quilt quilting. However, a simple meander over the quilt surface with a little ditch stitching, and a few lines of ruler work in the centre star is all I did on the baby quilt and it has awesome texture.

I did do some pretty intense custom quilting on the original Pop Star quilt. A linear meander went in the large star along with a couple of 'ghost' stars.

Here the echoed lines are on the diagonal, emulating rays. I followed the 'v' of the star points with three lines on either side of a 2" channel, in which I quilted a feather meander. A feather swirl design went in the remaining four corners of the star. Those echoed lines, three of them 1/4" apart, then a half inch gap, then three more 1/4" apart, look really good, don't they? You can see where I got some of my quilting inspiration from for the throw I just made.

Hope this gives you an idea as to how you can quilt your quilt if it's stumping you. I could see straight lines, echoed across the entire quilt surface, either vertical, horizontal or diagonal. Or divide the quilt into four quadrants and quilt 1" spaced lines in alternate directions. A walking foot could accomplish this pretty quickly; no ruler required!

Third, I would like to give one more shout-out to my oh-so-kind sponsors.

  1. Your quilting is awesome on your original and also lovely on both newer ones. Mine is probably way too simple. Looking forward to seeing more photos you're going to share. Take care & hugs.

  4. It's fabulous to see your quilt - it looks great in that light!! I'm gutted that my own is not yet a done deal - it's not even basted yet, let alone quilted - just too much happening around here! I have a busy few days but will try and get it to a show off state before the linky ends?!

  8. I LOVE how your version turned out Sandra! I haven’t had a chance to finish quilting my fussy cut version yet (the summer travels for our new grandson started earlier than expected due to his very early arrival) but I’m really looking forward to quilting my top up in the fall! Thank you so much for designing such a wonderful pattern and for hosting a fun quilt along! Laura

  10. What a proper party you are throwing for the famous Canadian! I love seeing all the versions and wish all the participants good luck. Mine will be much later, but I can't wait. The colors are similar to yours, in that I had the perfect fabric which was really a mistake but now it is on purpose. Congrats on another successful QAL!

  12. Hi Sandra! I saved this post to read when I had a free minute. I am wild about both versions of Pop Star. I am 100% your dad, the famous Canadian, would definitely adore this quilt in blue. And it truly does look exactly like your EQ8 version. I am always thankful when you share closeup pictures of your quilting. All the thumbnail pictures look intriguing to me. Amazing that they all start with the same pattern, isn't it? AND, it's YOUR pattern. {{Hugs}} a bunch, my friend. ~smile~ Roseanne

  15. Sandra this is just one more fabulous pattern from you. No wonder you are my favourite Canadian designer! When I get my Pop Star quilted I can only hope it finishes half as pretty as yours! My favourite Star Quilt is still the Lonestar, but I’m partial to Ohio Stars and Friendship Stars as well. 😉
