SAHRR Round 5

This week the prompt came from Brenda at Songbird Designs. She asked us to make quarter or half log cabins. For project number one, this really stomped me, but I am so grateful for the other hosts as well as other participants who share inspiration. Here is where this first quilt sits in its fifth round.
I’m not sure what’s going to go between the floral squares so I’ve left it so that I can either incorporate week six prompt there or extend somehow the week five into week six prompt.

It was both Kathleen as well as Judy at Busy Hands are Happy Hands who inspired the quarter log cabins in the four corners. I knew I wanted to extend the diagonal flow of this quilt somehow so that was perfect. This is what it looked like once I had the 12 quarter log cabin blocks done.

I really like the way I’ve managed to flow each round into the next with this quilt with both fabric and design, which is why I placed the floral fabric in the four corners of week four’s stars. It picks up on the use of it in week one round with the snowball blocks. Once I had those four log cabin corners in place, I thought maybe another square of the floral fabric at either end of the log cabins would help to make those in week 4 not seem out of place, but flowing into this round, and I think it works.

Project two, where I’m doing a block a week was pretty easy but it was another host, Anja, who inspired the twist on this block.
I was able to use some of my already-cut 2.5" squares and strips as well as scraps to make this block.

Anja’s are tipped 90° whereas I mirrored mine, which gives it a Greek key design look and would actually be pretty cool across a whole quilt. Hmm, inspiration for the next baby quilt!

Here are my five blocks for each week plus the original heart block that started this quilt. I will be putting sashing between these blocks and will make an extra so I have a nine-block layout for this quilt.
So in love with the colours in this quilt!

Linking this post up for week five at Brenda’s.

  1. I love all the people using log cabin blocks to frame their corners! Your top quilt looks amazing! And of course I love the sampler style as well--I hope you are enjoying that format too. I'm thinking that I might do 2 quits if we do this again next year.

  2. I love all the inspiration the hosts give each week, too, and I am excited to see how these both come together with the final prompt this week for you!

  3. I really love how you used the log cabin blocks in your first project (and the additional floral squares!) - and the "Greek key" design for the second project looks fantastic! I'm excited to see how you set them in the final project.

  5. It is so helpful to see what other's do with the prompts. I was a bit lost with those log cabin blocks. Your version of the SAHRR is coming together beautifully! Looking forward to see how you handle the last prompt.
