So yes the parts aren’t all sewn and there is space to be filled in but let me assure you, I know what’s going there and I am squealing inside about it. So how did this round evolve? You may recall I’d cut eight 3.5” blocks from the floral border fabric to go on either side of the log cabins.
It helped give coherence to the quilting, pulling the fabric used in the inner border out to those corners. I made the first of four kite blocks in the cherry-tones burgundy to help emphasize the diagonal movement. ![]() |
It made my brain ache, orienting correctly the cat fabric for those side-setting triangles! I only cut one wrong. The cat fabric is all gone now. |
I wondered if I could make four complete blocks to go on the sides to pull that movement out into this final round. However, did I have enough of the navy floral used in the original centre? I did. Just. They are 6” finished so round 6 would have to be 6”…
Inspiration struck when I had the idea to use the floral border from round one as a frame here. Give your eye a bit of a rest and again give coherence. I did the math as to how much running inches of fabric I’d need. Here’s what was left of this precious, first expensive quilting cotton fabric I’d bought for the first bed-sized quilt I’d made when I won those blocks and had to learn how to make a quilt.
You can see how a small amount can add up to length. I didn’t have enough. Dammit I shouldn’t have cut those eight blocks! But…
What if I used them and carefully joined them? That would mean 6” less I’d need per side. Yep. I could do it! So that is what has happened. They aren’t joined yet for two reasons. The main one is that until late afternoon yesterday, I wasn’t sure what to put on the outside of the floral. Cream? Pink? If I’m going in background colour order, that would be it. But I was leaning towards cream. The only problem is that the navy kite blocks are on pink background so I need to perhaps blend those somehow into the cream. Cream is the background for the four corner kite blocks so there’s no problem there. And then ZING! Into my head burst an idea to finish off the corner kite blocks. It’s going to be stellar. 🤩 The second reason for the round not being entirely stitched together is that we are off to Cuba for a lovely sun- and beach-filled week so only had Monday and Tuesday to work on this and prep for the trip. So I may not respond to comments as I’ll be busy holding down a beach or deck chair and turning pages in my book.😎
