Rainbow Scrap Challenge Quilt 1

After I posted my turquoise block on Instagram on the weekend, and then a photo of the layout on my design wall of all eight blocks, it started an itch that had to be scratched.
Annoyingly, the HSTs do not have their strips oriented all the same way, because I forgot to pay attention to which diagonal I needed to cut on, but then I remembered something Angela Walters said in a course I took with her, "If you make a mistake, repeat it, and it becomes a design element!" So I'm calling this and its yellow friend a design element.😇

This is the third unicorn centre. I love them. It’s a Benartex Fabrics print by Ann Lauer that I used during my Follow Your Own Path quilt along in 2021 to make ‘Be A Unicorn’.

Here’s the photo that ‘bit’ me:

So I scratched that itch, making a light green churn dash block to make nine blocks. I don't have many large scale prints at all, so it was a bit of a stretch to find something green that could work. I chose this Kaffe Fassett green flower.
This one I was sure to make the HSTs with the strips all horizontal.

Once I made that block and put all nine on the design wall, I just had to sew them all together. And here is the top! I first laid it out with the three unicorn blocks in three of the four corners, but they seemed too far away from each other, so I did them as you see below.

The blocks are 15" so this is a nice 45" square quilt!

I didn't pay attention to rainbow order, or to the order in which Angela at so scrappy gave out the colours of the months, but I did realize something that I hadn't even planned: I had five off-white backgrounds and three pure white backgrounds before I started to assemble the light green block. So that's why I made the light green on a pure white background to make a total of four, and then alternated pure white with off-white backgrounds. It adds interest. I also love the secondary pattern of squares and squares on point. You bet some custom quilting will go there!

Now to find or make a backing and quilt it up, and wait for it to find its home.

If you'd like to make this block, here is the post with the tutorial.

My second project saw three turquoise brick blocks made and one more navy block. I think I'll make 20 blocks for a 4x5 layout. The blocks finish at 8" x 10" so that would make a 40" square quilt. It's going to have all cool colours.
I love having empty sandwich baggies of crumbs! The smallest I will save these days is 1.5" and even then I sometimes will toss them. I will admit that I had to dig into my strips bins for a few pieces to make these four. I may make another aqua, but I do have enough pieces to make a light blue brick block so that may happen yet in my quest for 20!
