Project Quilting 14.2 Pink Tint

I'm popping in with a pink project (love me some alliteration, especially when it happens as I type!) for you to peruse from Project Quilting 14.2 with KimLapacek where pink had to be the predominant colour.

As soon as I read the challenge, I knew this pillow by Minki Kim on the Benartex blog, which I've made before, twice, would be the one. I'd put it in my Etsy shop or on my couch. Done! Often the down-to-the-wire part of a PQ challenge is because I've waffled over just what one of several ideas I have should I make? Well, not so with this one, nor 14.1! I was wrong.

Wait, you are thinking, your first photo IS a heart cushion/pillow.
Yep, I answer.
So, explain? you now ask.
I sort of had another deadline for Sunday morning, 12:01 am Sunday morning to be exact, and it had a few growing pains, mostly of my own dumb making.
Ohhh, you breathe. Explain.

If you check out my previous post, The Art of Riding Thermals, you'll see the quilt that had a couple of unforeseen growing pains, which has got quite the amount of love. Even an offer to purchase. Too bad, it was going to that particular person anyhow, with her prior approval. (gosh the p's still prevail! Not on purpose! Ha! there's another!)

Anyhow I met that deadline with a little time to spare to start on this pillow. By early Sunday morning, like pre-yoga teaching from 8:30-10 am, I had a top. I made it purposely petite so that I could get it done quickly. A petite pillow for Valentine's Day I think, too, is extra adorable.

The method is quilting as you apply the strips, which are each made of three sections that you assemble ahead of putting them all together. I had to do a little math to make it fit on my ~13" square of batting.

I hunted through my pink stash for a suitable backing, pulled two or three great ones, but was ecstatic to stumble upon this beauty from AGF. No waffling! Use it! Ah, that is the best part of working to a deadline: I cannot overthink, something I willingly admit to be afflicted by.

I even said to myself, 'Just breathe,' and took the time, cutting the two sides slightly larger than necessary, to match where they'd open. With hearts that large, I knew it would make me twitch were they off.

The entire project was pieced and quilted with Aurifil in two different weights.

I did a little quick outline of the heart using my walking foot and 40 weight.

Would I have time to do a proper binding or just a RST, stitch, turn right sides out? I could, and I would, and I did!

I have to make a proper custom-sized insert with the batting remnants I used for the photo below in my wicker chair.

I'm keeping this baby, but I feel the desire (rather strongly, and I'm trying to resist, because other duties and deadlines are happening behind the scenes this week with one more acceptance into a magazine of a design that has a short turnaround) to remake it in the 20" size and put it in my Etsy shop. Yes, I had better get to that if I want to aim it towards a Valentine's customer I know.

  10. Oh, Congratulations Sandra on both 14.1 and 14.2. You are on a real roll and having read about the Art of Riding Thermals earlier this week, I am both amazed and in awe. Working under pressure does suit you but I'm happy you have the Yoga breathing down to a fine art.

  11. Hi Sandra, plaudits to you for the pleasant post for me to peruse this p.m. And it is a perfect pink padded patchwork pillow peeking from its peaceful pampered position. (I beg pardon for the plethora of p's.) As for The Art of Rising Thermals, it was so eye catching, and I want to say simple, but that isn't what I mean - as if flying geese are ever exactly simple, but it's one of the most striking quilts and I love it. I wish I had your talent for adapting a simple pattern into a work of art. And the pillow is lovely too. Again, aPologies for ppps.
