Un Mélange

That's French for a mixture. Kind of what I've been doing for the past week and a bit. Things have been a bit quiet on the blog; I actually had thought to take a break after the Plus Playtime QAL finished, but I am still here. Might take that break in August but I'll let you know. Allow me to show you the mélange of sewing I've been doing.

This is the quilt I decided to make in Roseanne's No Stress Sew Along at Home Sewn By Us. It's called Up From Here and Alyssa of Pile o' Fabric designed it. These are leftovers (almost all of them are gone now) of Dot Crazy, the line I used to make the first rendition of Plus Playtime for the ezine Modern By the Yard, which was the quilt we made this year in my annual QAL. In fact, wee-ooh, wee-ooh, my quilt uses the same strips construction method that Alyssa uses in hers! I have not seen this quilt until deciding to join in with the QAL... Anyhow I love it, with some Kona from my stash.

Because Avril is awaiting her ahem, chiropractor appointment, I've been quilting this on my Bernina.
This will be the fourth quilt to go to the Sexual Assault Centre in Windsor as one of my H2H quilts. I specify that they go to a kid, so when I saw that I had a decent-sized hunk of the cows and pigs print from my aunt's "C' Boss!" cows quilt, I thought what fun, and paired it with some turquoise. You'll have to wait for the finish post to see it all, but I'm calling the quilt 'Moo-vin' On Up' and hope to bring a child a smile amidst pain he or she should never have to experience.

I pulled out the nice stack of 25 blocks of Cheryl's at Meadow Mist Designs Meadow Mystery that have been waiting for a year and a half to become a flimsy, and sewed them up:

While sewing that, I had a bit of a DrEAMi! as well, not a true DrEAMi! because I didn't drop EVERYTHING, but I sewed the leftover HSTs from Lift Up into this. It's been added to since this photo:
Smaller photo because smaller project😉

I'm also picking away at assembling my 150 Canadian Women quilt top, making the sashing and sewing sashing to blocks and blocks into rows, all as leader/enders:
It's going to be one huge quilt! I adore it.
One of those blocks was the jumping-off point for my Island Batik Challenge this month, secondary patterns. I'm using these fabrics plus one more as the background:
Aren't they divine? Of the I-could-lick-them variety right?!
Here are four of the blocks; they are not set in their going-to-be-pattern yet.
Can you find the block in the Canadian Women quilt? Can you figure out what I'm doing with these (I will have 16 total to flip and flop and rotate) to create a secondary pattern? You won't have too long to wait as there is not even an entire week left in July! And yep, partly to keep you in suspense, and I haven't made those yet, there is the eggplant fabric in the fabric photo, though not shown in the blocks!

  1. Are you like RUST and never sleep? Those Island Batiks are so gorgeous, love those colours together. And the small pic of the small quilt, love that too. Anything blue, green or purple, of course.

  2. I think in the summer everything else steps up a gear and sewing related things shift back . It's one of the laws of physics
Moovin on up looks great . Can't wait to see the backing

  4. So, you had a partial Dreami?
I don't know about licking, because after I finish drooling, I just get out the mop :-D
The Canadian Women Quilt will be an heirloom - you do know that? Right?
This post is a Melange but more like a delicious buffet - a true feast for the eyes. How will you top this one? Oh I know - with yummy quilting pictures :-)

  5. I love the variety and loveliness of all these projects, Sandra! I can just see you puttering and flitting between them in your studio. Some weeks are nose to the grindstone, finish one project, and others are this kind of picnic sampling. I hope you're enjoying "a little bit of this, a little bit of that"! :)

  6. You are coordinating quite a few things. Any word on your machine? I love the Meadow Mystery from last year, only my husband isn’t crazy about it.....now to decide what to do with it. You have so many fun things going!!

  7. Hi Sandra! Wowee - you have gotten so far on your Up From Here! I am wondering how you are quilting it . . . and I'm sorry your machine has to go in for a check up. All of those 150 Canadian blocks look so fabulous together - and what a daunting project. That quilt will be huge when it is all together! Last of all, those Island Batik fabrics - they look just fabulous together, and I love those blocks. I can't wait to see what they grow up to be. We are enjoying a fabulous day here - 70s and no humidity! No sewing for me today - I'm going to take that baby on a long stroller walk and maybe share a donut or ice cream cone or something fun. Happy Friday! ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. Wow! You weren't kidding when you said you had a lot of different things going on. I hadn't yet got the notification in my e-mail about this latest post of yours and I was wondering how long it was going to take! I finally got the notification today at 7:49 and am just now commenting on blogs. I love the scrappy quilt you did for Roseanne's QAL. I'm a sucker for scrappy! Seeing Cheryl's mystery quilt reminded me that I still need to finish mine too. The stop is done but I need to quilt it! And yes, those batiks are yummy! I'll be watching to see what you are doing with those beauties. :)

  9. Congrats on getting an old project completed! I find that I totally forget everything about the quilt if I wait too long to complete it. Good reason, for me, to get 'er done right now! All your projects are lovely, and I can see they are keeping you busy!

Up from Here will definitely brighten someone's life for sure! I'm curious what you are making with those yummy batiks!

  14. That is quite the eclectic collection of sewing Sandra - and a very fun read, thank you! I love the name for Moo-vin' On Up, you clever girl. And I can't wait to see your Island Batik finish.... although I believe Island Batik does recommend pre-washing in water not drool. lol xx

  18. Wow, Sandra! You’ve got a lot on the ball! Yes, the 150 quilt is huge! Lesley finished hers and it was on display at a local little quilt show last month. You won’t be disappointed when you’ve finished sashing it. It’s gorgeous!
