Centred QAL - Construction: Block A

Yay! We get to start sewing this week. I don't know about you, but I rarely cut an entire quilt out; I just have to see what the block is going to look like, so I invariably start piecing and then cut as I go. So in a QAL, it's hard to have to wait isn't it? This week we are making Block A.
There are four of these modern quarter log cabin blocks.

In order for you to understand where Block A will go, here is the quilt layout. This will help those who are not doing a monochromatic quilt. For example, two of my Block A are oranges, and two are greens. If your quilt is monochromatic, like my original Centred quilt, then you make all Block A exactly the same.

Piecing Block A
1. Sew the 2 1/2" strip of light blue to the 1 1/2" strip of bright blue. Press the seams open or cut the strip set in half and press the seams of one of the halves to the light blue (centre) and the other half to the bright blue. Cut apart in (16) 2 1/2" segments. Select four of these units with the seams pressed towards centre; set aside the remaining twelve.

2. Sew a 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" navy rectangle to the right side of the unit from step 1. Press seams towards the centre unit.

Sew a 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" navy rectangle to the top of the unit, pressing the seam towards the centre again. Continue to press the seams for Block A all towards the centre.

3. Sew a 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" medium blue rectangle to the right side of the above unit.

Then sew a 5 1/2" x 2 1/2" medium blue rectangle to the top of the unit.

4. Sew a 6 1/2" x 1 1/2" navy rectangle to the right of the unit above; sew a 6 1/2" x 1 1/2" navy rectangle to the top of the unit.

5. Sew a 7 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle to the right of the unit above; sew an 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle to the top of the unit.

6. Sew a 9 1/2" x 2 1/2" navy rectangle to the right side of the unit above; sew a 10 1/2" x 1 1/2" navy rectangle to the top of the unit to form Block A. Your block should measure 10 1/2". Make four.

Have fun! Next Friday I'll be back with Block B, and half of your blocks will be done!

Here are my four Block A blocks. This is not how they will be in my quilt.

My DrEAMi! linky party begins this Saturday as it is the last Saturday of April. This is where those of us who chase squirrels, celebrate our joy in being sidetracked. Did you happen to see the free squirrel block that Amy Friend has re-released? It's free right now. Two of my friends sent me the link as they know how I love a good squirrel chase.

Speaking of squirrel-chasing, have you seen that Connecting Threads (affiliate link here and below) is carrying Edyta Sitar fabrics? And, well, I feel obligated to let you know that one of her kits is newly in the clearance section. If you are having trouble focusing, sometimes a quilt kit can help you find the joy in sewing without the worry of finding coordinating fabrics... the last purchase I made was, in fact, a kit! Mine was a deal at bluprint, but I've bought kits and clearance fabric (great for backing, oh and btw their wide backing actually is on sale 25% off)...

Isn't that gorgeous?
In view of the fact that it was the Queen's birthday on Monday, and St. George's Day (patron saint of England) on Thursday, this one, Royal Memories, also caught my eye:
Ha! When I checked the link, I realized this is Cheryl's design! The Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs!😍

  1. I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who likes to cut a bit and then sew a bit. Block A, here I come! Thank you, Sandra!

  2. I also like to cut enough for one block first, I'm too anxious to see what the block looks like first.

  4. Hi Sandra! I really look forward to seeing your version of Centred in multiple colors. I have a hard time envisioning it. I actually tried drawing it out in EQ8 so that I could play around with fabrics rather than color (lazy, I know). I actually have two bundles that are just gathering dust and wondered which one would better. I am so thrilled to see block A released. {{Hugs}} I'm going to go check out the Connecting Threads link . . . and the kit! ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. Thank you. Printed that out & am ready to cut & sew. I too do a little bit of this & that, as with a bad back I need to vary my activities so I don't ache later. Just finished piecing the second baby quilt & have found enough fabric for the backing for both. I've had to cut down the border on both to only one, but still plenty big enough for wee ones. Take care & stay safe.

I wholeheartedly appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment, as they make my day! You can get around that by writing out your email within your comment so that I can answer you.
