Project Quilting 13.6 and Wrap Up

I finished Project Quilting, at Persimon Dreams, made every one of the six projects, and got them linked up on time. I'm pretty pleased with myself. Here is Challenge 13.6 Flying Geese.

I have had the Kona Nightfall for a while with the idea of a quilt background, rainbow colours on it, and haven't done anything about that thought. Until this challenge.

I am really pleased with how it turned out. I could NOT decide whether to turn it into a cushion or a tote bag. I'd even considered at first a wallhanging because I love the colour wheel aspect of it. Wall space is an issue up here, although I do change out some of my minis.

Finding the Benartex Fabrics 'Bree' by Nancy Halvorsen in my stash of navy and royal, made me super-excited. It was just perfect!

I used it for the binding too; gives a nice pop and happy feel to the front.

When I paper piece, I don't sew through the paper. It changed my LIFE when I learned how to do this thanks to Joanne at Canuck Quilter Designs way back in 2014. I also make templates; it takes a bit more time but it saves fabric and when there are wonky angles, it saves my sanity. I was able to use the template four times. No paper to rip either! 

Lots of threads came out to play to do the simple 'v' in each of the twelve geese. Most were Aurifil, but a few others were also used. Aurifil sent me the invisible to try when they replaced a wonky-feeding thread they'd sent me as an Island Batik ambassador. Well, a little over a year later, I finally had a project to give it a try on, and wow, I like this thread! I'll definitely be using it more.

I used it to SITD every one of the geese, and to do all the echo quilting. It really gives nice texture and I didn't even have to adjust the tension at all. My Bernina is a wonderful machine for great tension, but often with specialty threads like invisible or metallic ones, I do adjust it but not this time. I used a polyester in the bobbin. I could have used it to do the 'v' on each goose but I do enjoy matching and it gives them a little oomph I think.

Here it is IRL on our living room couch. It is 16.25" finished, a small size, but it's more for display than leaning on.😉

A huge thank you to Kim for dreaming this up 13 years ago, and to Trish for dreaming up the challenges each year so that Kim and the rest of us can challenge our creativity. This year was my third year participating and I was so excited to find out I won a prize in 13.5 challenge, a PDF pattern from Hunter Design Studio. After probably a half hour of perusing Sam's 99 patterns, I've chosen Fourteen Squared, a recommendation by Stephanie, who I've 'met' through Instagram and the Postcard from Sweden QAL.
