Beothuk Star QAL Final Parade of Finishes

Wow! I am so very excited to see the parade today and all week long of the Beothuk Star QAL quilt finishes. The main page for the QAL is here in case this is your first time visiting. The instructions will remain on the blog forever. I will be putting out a PDF of the pattern to purchase through my Etsy shop. Everyone who has finished a top or quilt will get a copy free.

Designing a quilt is a rush in and of itself, putting together the pattern is work and fun, and publishing the pattern is a little worrying: will people will like it, and/or even make it? When it is well-received, and then made by others, that rush become euphoric, truly. It's akin to seeing your child win an award, in school or in life. These are our quilt babies. I have loved seeing this baby evolve.

So here we are on the birthday of a famous Canadian, and no, it's not our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau! It's what my dad used to write on the calendar each year to the delight of us kids, and to the eye roll and wry grin of my mum, on the square, or beneath, as you see in the 1964 calendar below, for June 15.
My third annual QAL began this year on the birthday, April 3, of that famous Canadian's daughter! And it's rather auspicious for those basketball fans, that Canada's one and only NBA team, the Toronto Raptors, won the championship for the first time in history on Thursday, June 13, and that the parade of celebration is happening in Toronto on Monday, June 17! I know Dad would've been very pleased about this.

For those of you curious about the name, the Beothuk (Bay-uh-tuck) were an indigenous people of Canada, Newfoundland to be exact, who were wiped out by white Europeans. It's a very sad story, one you can read more fully in this post. The block is known as the Baby Bud, and it was used as block 13, for Shanawdithit, the last known survivor of her people, in the 150 Canadian Women QAL with Kat of Next Step Quilt Designs, a quilt along I loved being a part of. Yes, I do have to finish that quilt! Next quarter. When making block 13, and 15, which is similar, I noticed that when oriented a certain way, these blocks could create a star, and the design was born once I put it into EQ8.

My sponsors have been so very generous, as per usual! Bernie of Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics is my main sponsor, and the person who said, when I'd mused that ha, maybe we should do a quilt along with my November Blogger Bundle I'd curated for her shop, "Yes! Let's do it, Sandra!" and this year's QAL was born. And yes, the bundle for this quilt is still available in her shop, but I believe only one or two are remaining.

You can read all about my sponsors and what they are offering in this post.
There are eleven fabulous prizes! Winners will be drawn using the random number generator next Sunday, June 23, and announced on Monday, June 24.

Thank you so very much for quilting along with me. There is a trust relationship when one joins in with a quilt along, and I hope you are as happy with your quilt as I am with my two!

All right! Let's get this party started! The link up is below. If you have any trouble, please do not hesitate to email me a photo of your quilt: ephdra at gmail dot com and I will link you up!

  2. I have seen a few of the quilts fro your QAL on various blogs and IG already and they all look fantastic. You've held another successful QAL and yes I agree designing and then writing up a quilt pattern is full of trepidation. No worries my friend this is a winner!

  3. Happy Birthday, oh famous Canadian. I love how that was written on each year's calendar. It's something my dad would have done except we had a fabric calendar with sequins on each person's special day. I've been looking forward to seeing all the quilts and quilt tops. I'm off the peruse the posts. Happy Saturday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  5. My one flimsy is done and I'm hoping to get it quilted in the next day or two and link up as a finish. Life got in the way of the second version, but now I have a little kit all cut and all the HSTs sewn for a fun future project. I love the design and just had the ongoing issue of squirrels having pups in my brain :)
