Seeing the World Through Autumn-Coloured Glasses

I usually do my posts later in the morning, sometimes afternoon.  This is because the seeds of the post often germinate during my morning walks with Rocco.  My husband passed the comment a few months ago that each of us is quite like our respective dogs personality-wise.  At first I thought, um no?  However, since that comment, I have been realizing more and more how true it is.

Rocco sees the world through rose-coloured glasses.  He loves everyone, human, dog or cat, at first meeting, without exception...

...even those that, shockingly, are inanimate!
He forgives in a heartbeat, he moves on; in all honesty, for the most part I do this.  I believe he sees things in perspective.  Our problems are really pretty minuscule.

from Earth Blog

He is a happy, joyful, I-love-my-life, I-love-my-world kind of doggie.
Lake Erie in Lakeside Park Oct. 18

One of the streets in Kingsville Oct. 18

He lives in the moment, something I am working hard on, with some success.  My quilt guild has been occupying a large place in my life this past week (which is why there have been no posts), some positive:
Three more wheelchair quilts quilted, needing strings and binding
Brand new WIP#1--Blocks from the quilt "Pearl Grey" in Machine Quilting With Style by Christa Watson, a book I ordered the day it was released in Canada, Oct. 12, for our guild. My plan as librarian was to make a project from each book I order to help showcase the new books.  I only got 2 blocks made in time for the meeting, but I love the way this is going to turn out! It's an awesome book for the beginning quilter.  Truly.

Brand new WIP #2 from First Steps to Free-Motion Quilting by Christina Cameli, the second book I purchased for the guild.  This is another great book for the beginning quilter, something that I think this guild overlooks.  I used 30-wt Gütermann cotton for the words.
...some negative.  The Universe put these two photos in my path early this morning:
On Late Night Quilter Stephanie's Instagram, and made by Julie, whose business is Owly Design.

From Quilts and Cakes Gina's Thought For The Week post
Without going into a lot of detail, the long hours and hard work and excitement I had already put into my guild librarian position has not been well-received by the president along with one or two apparently offended-by-a-friendly-reminder-to-return-overdue-books members.  I'm out.

At this stage in my life (well, really, in any stage of anyone's life) I surround myself with happy things.

Even when skies are grey... Oct. 21
There isn't a mean bone in this pibble's body.  I love the ladies that I have gotten to know through the wheelchair quilts charity project.  I will stay in touch with them for sure, as they do make me happy.  As do you, my readers in this wonderful QBL I am a part of.  :-)

Should be back with some finishes this week! Yay, and two are on my Q4 FAL list!  One more thing, Craftsy is having a one-day sale today on classes.  $19.99!  Clicking through on the link on my sidebar to find a class and take advantage of this great deal (voice of experience on more than one occasion) will put a few bucks in my pocket, and I thank you.

And if you haven't seen it, Stephanie, of Late Night Quilter, my hive mama for the New Bloggers Hop this past summer, has a new Quilter's Planner out, which looks pretty swanky!  Hop over to check it out and follow her link for purchasing.  btw there is a giveaway there today as well!  The block I designed for the Fabri-Quilt blog hop got chosen as one of the 52 blocks featured. :-)

Linking up with Sew Fresh Quilts and Freshly Pieced.

  1. Love your post. My sister has a philosophy regarding friends and acquaintances ... she does not deal with those who do not treat her well. IMO, it is an important part of maintaining one's sense of self worth and dignity.

  2. Amen, Sister!! :D This is a great post and a great reminder for all of us to be more like Rocco :) Congratulations for standing up for yourself!

  3. Love your post. Well done you for putting you first. I'm glad my post was good for you. I'm sorry that your time in the guild has been cut short. I know they will miss you but that's their own fault. You deserve to be treated better than you obviously have been. Stan is very much like Rocco. Everyone is a friend. I've learned that hard way that might be good for a dog but unfortunately it doesn't always work in the real world. It's taken a while but I'm my first priority now. My real friends understand, those that didn't I don't miss xxx

  4. I love seeing your projects and am so happy to be part of your QBL guild. Sorry to hear of your challenges with the guild. However I am so glad you were still able to meet some kindred spirits in your work with the guild.

  5. Great post!
As your loving non-quilter sister, sorry to say but guilds have a cultish ring to them LOL. Who needs them when you have your QBL as you call it?
I miss Rocco, love him so much! 😊❤

  6. Good for you!!! If it isn't fun, don't do it. Be happy. My block was chosen as well...how exciting. We're putting in a guild order for the planner.

  7. I'm sorry about your issues with the guild, but I'm glad you can find the positives. It's tough when a voluntary role becomes stressful. Then it's definitely time to reassess whether it's worth it.

  8. Sorry to hear about the negative, but good for you for standing up for yourself. It can be hard to set boundaries, and this is a shining example of nurturing and cultivating what is best for you. Bravo. I'm sure it isn't / wasn't / might not be easy, so hugs and support from over here.

  9. Definitely a lesson learned the hard way. I always wonder why, for the most part, some overbearing members of a group are allowed to treat others badly. It was a bad experience, but probably just not the right group for you. Rocco hugs have healing powers!

  10. That's right! Sing it, girlfriend! You've got to ACCENTUATE the Positive.... Eliminate the Negative...

  14. loved your photos, quotes and reflections in this post. Life is short! I like the following quote attributed to Meryl Streep, but originally by José Micard Teixeira . “I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me.

I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience.”

  15. I actually took a screen shot of gina's post and kept it in mind when I didn't volunteer to come to work on Tuesday when short staffed . Shame about the guild , but why have a librarian then get stroppy when she carries out the role she , ie you, were asked to do ! It will give you more sewing time with us your imaginary friends ...

  16. Sandra this is a great post and how you handled the negative but kept focused on the positive is a great example to us all! We're your quilt guild of the heart and we love and appreciate you!
I love that photo of Rocco with the rat statue. :)

  17. Great to see your wheelchair quilts and books - the blocks you have made look wonderful too! That spot Lake Erie looks like a spot my dog and I walk, though half a world away, Bibra Lake. Absolutely agree about surrounding yourself with things that make you happy!

  18. I was very touched by this post.. It's very reflective....I'm glad you have the dog to help you sort your way through things. It's true that volunteer groups can be difficult to work with sometimes and we have to decide whether it's worth it to spend the time. I'm glad that you are following your heart and spending time doing what brings you joy and positivity.

  19. Here's to happy, positive things. So sorry your experience with the guild soured, but glad that you still came out with some new friendships to enjoy. I'm sure Rocco helps keep all in perspective :)
